IS SUMMONED BY DEATH End Comes to Well-Known Resident Suddenly Sunday Morning The community was shocked to learn Sunday forenoon that John J. Rauch Sr. had passed away during the morning from a heart attack. He had gone to the Congregational church as usual to attend to his duties as sexton and was on his way home when the attack came. He was helped home and medical aid summoned, but no relief was possible He remained conscious almost to the last, conversing with his family, and his last words were the Lord's prayer repeated in German. Funeral services were held from the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon, the business houses closing as a mark of esteem. Rev. C. W. Hempstead, former pastor, now of Muscatine, was in charge of the service. Songs were sung by Mrs. Charles Raffensperger, Charles Ferguson and Mrs. M. Jacobs, with Mrs. Ferguson at the piano. The pall bearers were J. P. Lawlor, Karl Kerr, S. M. Hutzell, E. C. Kempf, H. S. Lohman and George Merck. The church was filled to overflowing and many could not gain admittance. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. All of his brothers and sisters were at the funeral except Mrs. Minnie Stickler of Richmond, VA., who visited him in Victor last summer. John Jacob, son of Caroline and John Jacob Rauch, was born April 18, 1864, at Baden, Germany, and departed this life at Victor, Iowa, at the age of 66 years and 1 month. He came to the United States in the spring of 1883 and located and worked around Homestead for a few years, and then came to Victor. He was married to Elizabeth Margaret Stoker Jan. 26, 1893, and to this union five children were born: John J of Victor, Wm F of Brooklyn, Walter D. of Topeka, KS., Mrs. Clara Scandridge of Williamsburg and Mrs. Marie Mumby of Waterloo. He and his wife started their wedded life on a farm northwest of Victor. Later on he moved to Victor and started a dray line with the assistance of his sons, and was in this business for 18 or 20 years. He was a member of the M. W. of A. and one of the earnest workers in the Knights of Pythias. His life exemplified the life of Damon and Pythias. He was baptized in the Lutheran church and in February, 1925, he transferred his membership to the Congregational church, to which he remained a faithful and steadfast co-worker with his fellow man. In the same year he was elected deacon and served in that capacity until death came. He had acted as janitor for the church since January, 1926, and the last duty he performed on this earth was to ring the Sunday School bell, calling the little children to come so they, too, might learn the wonderful story of Jesus. He was a great lover of horses and a man of industrious habits. When he did a piece of work it was always well done. Besides his widow and children he leaves six grandchildren, two brothers and four sisters: Charles Rauch of Deep River, Mrs. Katie Weisskopf and Mrs. Mary Stoker of Victor, Mrs. Minnie Sticker of Richmond, VA., Fred Rauch of Victor and Mrs. Emma Meyer of St. Charles, MO., also a host of relatives and friends.
