Harlan Powell, singer with Evangelist Crimm. "Rock of Ages," "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and "Nearer My God to Thee," were sung by the choir of the Methodist Church, with Miss Marguerite Waggoner at the organ. Pall bearers were F.E. Perkins, J.K. Fraser, R.N. Shaw, Lee Cochran, V. Price and M.B. Matthews. Burial was in Bluff Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under direction of Callison-Riggs Undertaking Co. John James Wayt was born May 30, 1839, near Philadelphia, Pa., being a son of Dr. William C. and Mrs. Wayt, and was one of a family of 11 children. In early boyhood he moved with his parents to Iowa, and December 31, 1861, near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was united in marriage to Caroline Elizabeth Lutz. In 1878 Mr. and Mrs. Wayt removed to Nebraska, residing in that state and Kansas for 16 years. they they returned to Iowa and from Iowa went to El Reno, Okla., thence to Missouri, making their home in Monett, Springfield, Liberty and Warrensburg, coming to Springdale 24 years ago from the latter place. At the age of 22 Mr. Wayt was converted and while residing in Nebraska and Kansas served ten years as a minister of the First Methodist Church, and also followed teaching. After his return to Iowa he served as an apprentice in the monument works of a brother, and followed this work for 30 years, and also spent 25 years as a bricklayer and plasterer. Soon after coming to Springdale he engaged in the monument business here but for the past few years has operated a sorghum factory on his property on Holcomb Street. Mr. Wayt is survived by his wife, three daughters and one son, 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. The son is W. B. Wayt of Los Angeles, Calif., and the daughters are Mrs. Nora Sawnson, New Orleans, La., Mrs. Mary Beauchamp, Coquille, Oregon, and Mrs. Anna Hankins, who resided in a home adjoining her parents so that she could aid in looking after their wants. Mr. Wayt did not look with favor on secret fraternities, and had never joined such an organization, but both he and Mrs. Wayt were devoutly religious and have been regular attendants at the revival meeting in progress near their home, Mrs. Wayt is a few years younger than her husband, and both have enjoyed unusually good health for persons of their age. They were married when Mr. Wayt was 22 and Mrs. Wayt 17. Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral of Mr. Wayt were his son, W.B. Wayt of Los Angeles, Calif., a grandson, B.F. McNeil and wife and son, Bennie, Jr., of Kansas City and a granddaughter, Mrs. Dewey Ray, and Mr. Ray, of New Gulf, Texas.
