Read More	Dayton Review May 26, 1894 J. L. HEDLUND The subject of this sketch was born in Sweden on the 17th day of March 1837. His parents were poor and his advantages few. When he was twenty years of age his step father moved his family to this country, where he shortly after died, leaving a family of small children. The mother was a cripple and one sister a helpless invalid, and John being the eldest had to step into his father's place as the head of the family. The charge was a heavy one but the task was cheerfully undertaken and loyally did he care for the family in those years when most young men would be looking ahead to their own interests. He was married to Miss Christina L. Hedlund July 8, 1867. By her he has had eleven children, five of whom are dead and six are living. Mr. Hedlund was public spirited and took a keen interest in everything that pertained to public good. His charity would never allow him to turn a deaf ear to those in want or distress. His old friend Rev. John Linn in commenting on this said, "I have been called a professional beggar, in the cause of others and John L. Hedlund was a man who never refused to give to every good cause." He scratched his hand on a barb wire last year from which he suffered all summer and in fact has not seen a well day since. This spring he has suffered intensely from stomach trouble. The best medical treatment that he could get seemed to be of no avail in mitigating it. In his sickness he was cheerful, and to his spiritual friend and adviser, Rev. John Linn he said, "I have no fears of death, thank God." He died on Monday, April 16, the immediate cause being the rupture of a cystic tumor located between the stomach and liver, into the stomach. He was buried on Thursday afternoon from the Swedish M. E. Church, Rev. Bergren assisted by Rev. John Linn and Rev. Chapler conducting his funeral. After the conclusion of the services at the church the Masonic fraternity of which he was an honored member took charge of his remains and they were consigned to the earth with masonic honors. P. Snook acting Master and J. B. Schantz, Chaplain, conducted the ceremonies at the grave. All the business houses in town were closed and although the day was cold and disagreeable a very large concourse of people went through the rain to pay this tribute of respect.
