Dayton Review May 11, 1893 TWO MOTHERS DEAD There were two deaths and two funerals in Dayton last week. Two pilgrims who for nearly seventy-nine years had been tasting of the joys and sorrows of earth, and assisting in spreading the sunshine along its pathway, were removed to their reward almost at the same time. Two families on the same day were gathered to take a last look on the lifeless clay of their dearest on earth, and to hear the words of him who "spake as never man spake" assuring them of the resurrection. They each had raised families, some of whom had preceded them and "would be waiting and watching for them." They each had chosen the "Pearl of great price" and had for many years been pillars in the church. CATHARINE ERICKSON was born in Sweden October 16, 1814, and died in Gowrie, May 2, 1893. She emigrated to America with her husband in 1857, settling the same year in this township. Her husband died thirty years ago leaving her with a young family to fight the battle of life and win bread for her children alone. Bravely and cheerfully did she go about the task and although a cripple herself she raised her family to be useful members of society. She was converted to God in the old country, and during all her life has born him loving allegiance. She has had eight children, six of whom survive her. According to a promise made many years ago, Rev. John Linn preached her funeral. His text was Phil. 1-23: "Having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better." A large concourse gathered to bid this old friend a last farewell. * * * * * * * * * * Notes from Bill Erickson, #48021418 Karin (Carin) Jonsdotter was born in Långå, Hede, Jämtland, Sweden, the daughter of Jon Persson and Carin Olofsdotter. She emigrated from Sweden with her husband and children in 1857 arriving in Quebec, Canada and eventually to Dayton, Iowa and changed her name to Catherine Erickson. Even though her maiden name has been listed as Hedeen on death certificates of her children Hadeen is a derivitive of Hede parish and was incorporated into the name of her son John Hedlund and brother Jon Johnsson Hedien (born 1816), both of Dayton, Iowa.
