Mr. Pilcher died June 5 in the Ottawa County Hospital, Minneapolis. John Lester Pilcher was born Aug. 5, 1888, to James Henry Daniel and Sarah Rebecca Pilcher on their homestead in Cloud County, Kans., six miles east and 1 1/4 miles south of Glasco. He was the sixth child of a family of eight boys and two girls. He attended Bernard country school and graduated from Glasco High School, April 1, 1911. After graduation he worked in the Farmer's State Bank, then entered service Dec. 12, 1917. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Great Lakes, USS Norfolk and the USS Missouri. He advanced through the ranks being a Fireman First Class when he was honorably discharged June 25, 1919. Upon return from the service he worked for his future brother-in-law, Walter Louthan, on the farm. Later he cared for many elderly in the capacity of a male nurse. For the past 30 years he has made his home with his sister, Grace Pearson, in or near Glasco. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Glasco, and a member of American Legion. Music has been an important part of his life. He was always available to sing for any occasion. He has been a member of many quartets. For many years sang tenor in the Pilcher Quartet consisting of himself, his brother Gaylord, and cousins Purd and Bill Pilcher. He was preceded in death by his sister, Chloe; and brothers, Louis, Frank, Harry (Hal), Ray, Robert Ethelbert (Bert), and William McKinley (Mac). He is survived by his sister, Grace Pearson of Glasco, brother Gaylord of Bennington and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Burial was in the Glasco Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Francis, Rick Pilcher, Harlan Pilcher, William Anderson, Ronda Louthan, Nelda Shamburg. Organist was Mrs. Claude Harwood and singers were Mrs. Dean Donner and Mrs. Bob Chestnutt.
