John Brown was born on a farm in Pawnee Township, Smith County, Kansas, on Sept. 10, 1882, the son of pioneers, Jack and Mary Brown. He was one of twelve children. Because of his interest and active participation in civic affairs, his father was known as Pawnee Chief. Mr. Brown was united in marriage to Miss Ethel Wonderly in Smith County, Kansas, on Sept. 25, 1907. Their union was blessed with six children, four sons and two daughters. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Earl Branson, on June 27, 1917, also by his father, mother, brothers Fred, Dell, Lee and sisters Stella Peterson, Cora Crabb and Millie Spurrier. He resided in Smith County most of his life with the exception of two years, 1925 to 1927, when he lived in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Then moving back to Kansas on his farm. In 1937, with his family, he moved to Neosho, Mo. About eight years ago, Mr. Brown brought his wife and family to a farm near Alden. He had been a member of the Christian church at Burr Oak, Kansas since he was sixteen years of age, later transferring his membership to the Methodist church in Alden. His family was always his first consideration and upon them he showered the deepest love and devotion. Mr. Brown, who had been a victim of failing health for two years, was stricken with heart trouble four weeks ago at his home. He had been a patient sufferer, but the last few weeks had been borne with great suffering. He passed away at Ellsworth Hospital, Iowa Falls, on the morning of November 7, at the age of 67 years, 1 month and 28 days. Those left to mourn his departure are his wife, Ethel; the children, Carl and Eugene of Alden; Orville of Neosho, Mo; Mrs. John Rehm, Mrs. Percey Havens of Iowa Falls; his sisters, Mrs. Flora Blair of Neosho, Mo; Mrs. Pearl Delka of Superior, Nebr; brothers, Frank and Ernest Brown of Smith County, Kansas and Harry Brown of Almena, Kansas; also eight grandchildren, a large number of nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were his brothers, Frank and Harry, and his nephews, Marvin, Fred, Ralph and Rev. Wm. Brown. Those coming from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Minster of Kansas City, Mo; Harry Brown of Almena, Kansas; Rev. Wm. Brown, Mrs. Blanche Peterson and Cheryl of Smith Center, Kans; Mr. and Mrs. Orville Brown of Neosho, Mo; Frank, Ernie, Fred and Marvin Brown of Smith County, Kans; Mrs. Fannie Gilbraith of Annawan, Ill; and Mrs. Beryl Harris of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
