John FOXE (sic. FOX), another old and well known citizen of Fairfield, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth McALLISTER, Sunday afternoon, from an apoplectic stroke. He had been in declining helath for several years past. Mr. FOXE was born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, July 16, 1808, where he was married to Margaret WYCOFF, who died in 1845. He removed to Fairfield in 1856, and has since been a resident of this city. A plain unassuming man, his pleasant manner and kindly disposition won for him many friends who will regret his death. Four children survive Mr. FOXE, two sons, W.W. of Lewiston, Ill., and J.B. (sic. Jacob B Fox, 1840-1914, buried in Hillcrest cemetery at Brighton, Washington county, Iowa) of Richland; Mrs. McALLISTER of this city, and Mrs. John DUNCAN of Grand Forks, Dakota. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon, Dr. Magill, pastor of the Presbyterian church, conducting the services. The remains were interred in this city. --------- Note: it is suspected that John's wife, Margaret Wycoff (a/k/a Wyckoff) Fox, likely died in and is buried in New Jersey, but exactly in which cemetery isn't yet known. Any clarification would be appreciated. John's obituary gives her DOD as 1845; a "Shafer Family Tree" on Ancestry.com uses a DOD of March 28, 1847, but doesn't provide a burial location or other sourcing for that date. Also seeking information on W.W. Fox and Mrs. John Duncan (children of John and Margaret Fox) named in the obituary as surviving John's death. There were likely several other children born to John and Margaret Fox. Information about them would be welcomed.
