Death came to the well-known cafe owner in his owner where he had been confined for a week upon the advice of his physician. It was first learned that he was suffering from a heart ailment on Mar. 31. Mr. Petty had lived in Nelson for more than 40 years. He was born in Iantha, Mo., May 1, 1905, and moved to Nelson with his parents in 1912. He had been engaged in the restaurant business here during most of his life. Several years ago he became the active head of the popular cafe in which he had previously been associated with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Petty. At the time of his death Mr. Petty was a member of both the board of education and the city council here. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and the Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Ritterbush; two daughters, Mary Ellen and Willa Mae; a son, David; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David S. Petty of Nelson; and three sisters, Mrs. Harold Smith, Nelson; Mrs. Mary Bardsley, Wauneta; and Mrs. Frank Adams of Fairfield. Funeral services are being conducted at 2 o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon in the Nelson Methodist church (sic), with a former pastor, the Reverend Mr. V.R. Beebe of Lincoln, officiating. Petty, was born at Iantha, Mo., on May 1,1905, and passed away at his home in Nelson, Nebr., on April 6, 1953, at the age of 47 years, 11 months and 6 days. John moved to Nelson with his parents in 1912 and this was his home for more than forty years. He received his education in the Nelson schools, was a member of the Methodist church and of the Odd Fellows lodge. He was united in marriage to Mary Helen Ritterbush on June 2, 1934, and to this union were born three children, Mary Ellen, Willa Mae and Charles David. John spent the major portion of his life in business in Nelson. He was interested in his community and spent a great deal of time in trying to make Nelson a better place to live. At the time of his death he was a member of both the Board of Education and the City Council. Petty's Cafe has been for years the place to meet. Many committees and boards have held both formal and informal meetings there with John always in attendance. They were always welcome and he was never too busy to stop and help. He was devoted to his family, he loved not only his own children but all children. He had a wide acquaintance among people in all walks of life and his passing is not only a loss to his immediate family but to the entire community. When former residents returned for a visit, they would always go into Petty's to see John. In addition to his devoted wife and children, he is survived by his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. David S.
