Description	:	John Mills was born in County Armagh, Ireland, September 18, 1816 and died at his home in Fall River, Greenwood County, Kansas, Friday April 23, 1897. He was married to Miss Esther Murray in Ireland January 9, 1839 and the family came to America in 1853, and settled near Mt. Erie, in Wayne County, Illinois. On the 13th day of August he enlisted in Company D. 87th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served his country faithfully in the same company with his son James for three years. The deceased and family removed to Greenwood County, Kansas in 1863 and settled near Fall River. ... Read More	John Mills was born in County Armagh, Ireland, September 18, 1816 and died at his home in Fall River, Greenwood County, Kansas, Friday April 23, 1897. He was married to Miss Esther Murray in Ireland January 9, 1839 and the family came to America in 1853, and settled near Mt. Erie, in Wayne County, Illinois. On the 13th day of August he enlisted in Company D. 87th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served his country faithfully in the same company with his son James for three years. The deceased and family removed to Greenwood County, Kansas in 1863 and settled near Fall River. About twelve years ago he removed to Fall River where he continued to reside until his death. He was a long time chaplain of the G.A.R. Post at Fall River and was highly esteemed by all his comrades and acquaintances as was evidenced at his funeral, and the many expressions of sympathy and acts of kindness shown during his long illness. He was a great sufferer for seven months but bore it all with remarkable patience and Christian fortitude. Father Mills was true to his friends, his family and God. He had a great love for his adopted country. Some of his last words were--"The United States will seek to do right by all. Why should anybody seek to destory such a goverment." The deceased leaves three brothers and four sisters, and an aunt, his father's sister, proving that his was a hardy race of people. Four children also survive him. viz: James Mills, Jr., of Climax; Mrs. William McBrown of Fall River; Mrs. O. M. Miller of Whitter, California, and Miss Eliza of Fall River, who so nobly and lovingly and patiently cared for him during his long illness. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Caldwell, pastor of the M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. Blackburn, a former passtor whi preached the discourse. The members of the G.A.R. were in attendence and laid the body away at rest and peace in the Cemetery at Brown's Chapel, beside the body of his wife, who preceded him to the spirit land a little more that three years. [No man every prossessed a sweeter nature that did John Mills. He was loved by all without a single exception. He loved his God with all his heart, soul, mind and strenght, and he loved his neighbor as he loved himself. He did good at every opportunity, and he made opportunities for doing good. He builded upon a sure foundation, Jesus Christ, and he built works thereupon which shall abide and which entitles him to a joyous reward.] From Eureka Herald 30 April 1897 page 4.
