Thursday, December 11, 1911 ... page 1 ... column 3 John Monroe Moore was born near Bloomington, Indiana, August 4, 1834 and died at his home in southwest Osceola, December 13, 1911, at the age of seventy-seven years, four months and nine days. The deceased was a member of a family of four children, consisting of two brothers and one sister. Only one of this number is living, William S. Moore of Snohomish, Washington. Mr. Moore came with his parents to Clarke County, Iowa in 1855, settling on a farm nine miles southwest of Osceola. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth V. Webster, of Osceola, November 28, 1864. To this union were born six children, two sons and four daughters. The sons, Charles Webster and Ward Monroe, died in early life. The daughters are Mrs. May Jeffers of Moorcroft, Wyoming, whose husband was permitted to be present at the funeral; Mrs. Belle Gilmore of Los Angeles, California, whose husband died in September 1911; Frances and Bertha are at the home in Osceola, and were a great comfort to their father, especially during his illness. In this connection we mention the name of Mrs. Adelle Piper, who passed away at her home in Nebraska, June 14th last. She was the daughter of LeRoy Moore and wife who died leaving this tender child without father or mother. She was taken into the home of the deceased, where she received every kind attention of domestic education and moral training as those born in the home. her welfare was that of the family and her death deeply felt and caused much sorrow. Her husband and family reside in Weissert, Nebraska. There are eight grandchildren living; one Emmette Piper was present at the funeral. Mr. Moore enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War, member of Co. C., 48th Iowa Infantry. he was honorably discharged October 1863. For more than twenty years Mr. Moore was the county architect of bridge building. He was a good citizen, a kind neighbor, loving husband and father. his death brings sorrow to many hearts. The funeral services were held at the residence on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. F. Edwards of Osceola, assisted by Rev. S. A. Soxe of the Presbyterian Church. There as a large attendance and an abundance of flowers. At the close of the services the body was laid to rest in the Maple Hill Cemetery, the I. O. O. F. having charge of the services at the grave.
