Daily Ledger Thursday August 17, 1939 Pg. 3 Col. 3 ORVAL GANTZ PASSES AWAY IN MINNESOTA Well known farmer dies today following operation Word was received this morning of the sudden death of Orval Gantz, well-known Jefferson county farmer. Mr. Gantz passed away at 1:30 p.m. today at Grand Rapids, Minn., following an emergency operation. Known to many persons in the community, Mr. Gantz has been a successful farmer, living about eight miles northwest of here on the Fairfield-Packwood road. No funeral arrangements have been made. Mr. Gantz was 41 years of age. Last Thursday he left on a vacation fishing trip with Mrs. Gantz, son John Keith and his brother, Glenn Gantz. He underwent an emergency operation in Grand Rapids for stomach ulcers. Mr. Gantz had had several operations previously. He is survived by his wife, a son, John Keith; a brother Glenn; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Grauel, who is vacationing in the east at present, and Mrs. E. R. Bonnett, eight miles northwest, and his mother, Mrs. Lizzie B. Gantz, 307 West Washington. Mr. Gantz is also a brother-in-law of Richard Warner, 407 North Court street. ------------------- Fairfield Ia. Daily Ledger Monday, August 28, 1939 Pg. 3 Col. 6 OBITUARY JOHN ORVILLE GANTZ John Orville, youngest of the four children (sic. another sibling died at the age of two, in 1901) of John A. and Lizzie Gantz was born on the home place in Blackhawk Township of Jefferson County, Iowa on Feb. 1, 1898. His life interests have centered on this farm excepting the two years he spent in the Medical Service of the United States Navy. He passed away in the Grand Rapids, Minnesota, hospital Wednesday, August 16, 1939 (sic. he actually died on August 17, 1939) when past 41 years of age. On May 22, 1920 he was married to Etta Warner and has lived happily in this union since. One son, John, was born to them. The surviving loved ones are his sorrowing wife and son, his mother, Mrs. John A. Gantz, two sisters, Mrs. Ina Bonnett and Mrs. Marie Graul and one brother, Glen (sic. Glenn). Three aunts survive, Mrs. S. A. Copeland, Miss Mae and Miss Effie Gantz all of Fairfield. Besides these a wide circle of relatives and friends will mourn his untimely passing. On May 3, 1917 he enlisted in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy and served for almost two years receiving his honorable discharge on Feb. 19, 1919. He was a member of the Allen Jewett Post of the American Legioin. A highly respected and progressive framer he will be missed from the community. His death was unexpected. He was stricken while away from home and hurried to the hospital at Grand Rapids, Minn., where everything possible was done to alleviate his sickness but to no avail. Funeral services were held from the First Christian church of Fairfield on Sunday, Aug. 20 conducted by the minister, S. P. Williamson. The hymns "Near to the Heart of God" and "Abide With Me" were sung by Paul Coleson with Mrs. William M. Stever at the piano. Pallbearers were Wade Flinspach, Kenneth Clarke, Tom Myers, Elmer Ramsey, Frank Swan and Orville Coen. At the graveside the Allen Jewett Post of the American Legion held their ritual service, fired the customary salute and sounded taps. The remains were interred in Evergreen cemetery.
