Cutler's History of Kansas: JOHN OVERLEY, farmer, Section 1, P.O. Monmouth, was born in Indiana in 1843. He was raised as an agriculturist and received a common school education. He went to Illinois in 1852, where he remained on a farm until 1873, at the end of which time he came to Kansas. He located in Crawford County on a farm, where he remained five years in the grain and stock business. He then sold out, bought his present home, which he improved and is now cultivating. He belongs to the order of A. O. U. W. The McCune Herald Friday 20 Feb. 1931 Microfilm Girard City Library - Girard, Kansas AGED McCUNE CITIZEN PASSED AWAY WITHIN TWO WEEKS AFTER DEATH OF WIFE—FUNERAL TOMORROW _______ John Overley, age 88 years, 1 month and 7 days, passed away at his home on South Main street in McCune yesterday morning at about three o’clock. Mr. Overley’s wife died Saturday, February 14, and the funeral services were held Monday of last week. Mr. Overley went to bed after returning home from the funeral, and his condition continued to grow worse until death took him to join his companion of more than 66 years. Funeral services will be held from the Osage Church of the Brethren tomorrow, Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, and burial will be in the Brethren cemetery where Mrs. Overley was buried Monday, February 16. Mr. Overley was born in Delfi Indiana, January 19, 1848. He was married to Sarah Ann Edgecomb in Piatt County, Illinois, December 28, 1864. He brought his family to Osage township in 1873, and lived the rest of his life on his farm north of Monmouth and in McCune. Mr. Overley served Osage township as trustee for some time. He was always an industrious, progressive farmer, and had many friends. He was very active for a man of his years, only giving up active farm work a year or two ago. While he will be missed by many friends, his going was really beautiful. He and Mrs. Overley lived together in happy union 66 years. As Mrs. Overley’s health was not good, he desired to live as long as she lived, then he was ready to go, and in less than twelve days after she departed this life, he went to join her. Mr. Overley was the father of two sons and five daughters. One son, Harry M. and one daughter, Minnie Hartman, preceded him in death.
