Read More	Vevay Reveille Vevay Indiana Jan 11, 1894 John Patton was born in the County of Down, Ireland, Feb. 4, 1822, and died at his home, in Vevay, Sunday morning, January 7, 1897. Mr. Patton came to America with his parents when about 16 years old, settling in Vevay, where he was employed as a clerk in the store of U. P. Schenck, deceased. After clerking a short time, he engaged in the produce business in partnership with his brother William shipping produce South by flat boats. When the gold fever swept over the country in 1849 he and his brother, William went to California, where they remained two years, engaged in gold mining. He then returned to Vevay and again engaged in the produce business, until he breaking out of the war, when he enlisted and was commissioned Quarter Master of the 3rd Regiment Indiana Volunteer Calvary, and was promoted to Brigade Quarter Master. He served threes years and after being honorably discharged, returned home. About 1866 he went to New Orleans where he engaged in the commission business with Charles Pleasants, now deceased, they finally becoming partners in the business. He continued in his business until he death of Mr. Pleasants, when the firm became Patton & Benedict. A few years ago he retired and settled in Vevay. He was never married. He had a comfortable home, a residence on Market Street, in charge of his sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Stevens and Mrs. Ann Woody. Mr. Patton was an honest, truthful and frank man, and in all the affairs of life acted honorably. He merited his unusual business success. After years of industry he returned to the old home, to quietly spend the remainder of his day among loved kindred and warm friends. Mr. Patton had been sick more or less for several years, and for over a week had been confined to his home with a severe cold. While his death in one sense was sudden and unexpected, yet being a fleshy man, with a weak heart, it was not unnatural that he passed away suddenly. Early in the morning, his sister Mrs. Stevens went into his room to see how he was, and finding him sleeping did not disturb him, and in a few minutes more he was dead. His physician, Dr. Wollen, said he died of fatty degeneration of the heart. The probabilities are rare that after going to sleep Saturday night he never awoke or regained consciousness. Mr. Patton leaves to mourn their loss, one brother, Montgomery, four sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Stevens, Mrs. Anna Woody, Maggie, wife of J. K. Lewis, all of Vevay, Mary Jane, wife of Franklin Dufour, Riverside, California. Rev. Dr. Oldfather, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the funeral services at the residence of the deceased last Tuesday morning at 10 after the remains were laid to rest in the Vevay Cemetery. He pall bearers were, J. M. Scott, W. F. Goldenberg, A. J. Schenck, Henry K. Knox, G. S. Pleasants and F. L. Grisard.
