The Chamber of Commerce presented him with a gold watch and chain. The chain he traded for 12 acres of land in Linn County, Missouri. I don't remember what happened to the watch. He served in the 10th Indiana Cavalry and was an orderly sergeant. He kept the records books and detail in place of the 2nd Lieut. who could neither read nor write. He was riding to water with a squad at Fort Blakely, Mobile, Alabama when his horse stepped on a buried shell (as a torpedo) and blowed his horse to pieces. His heavy saddle with him on top, went over a tree 20 ft. high. His muscles of his arm were torn loose, but otherwise he came out OK. Senator Jack Works who was right behind him saw it all. When he was elected Senator in California, he put in for a special pension for $50 per month, which was a large amount then. In 1873 he was elected town marshall of Vevay. In 1875 he moved us to the Island in time to catch the 1875 summer flood, which about ruined us, but we stayed there until the great flood of 1884, when he gave it up and bought a farm in Indiana above high water. He lived on the farm until 1905, when his sight gave out. He moved to Vevay and for 13 years he had to loaf. "the most trying part of my existence" he said. He died in 1918 aged 89 yrs. His wife died 1924 at 91 year. He had fallen from a doorstep on July 18 1918 to the cement sidewalk below and never regained consciousness, dying the next morning.
