Description	:	John Paul (J.P.) Moore was born December 19, 1916 in Reasnor, IA, the fourth son of twelve children born to Rev. Forest and Ida Moore. He spent his boyhood in several communities in southeast Iowa and graduated from Kalona High School. Moore was born December 19, 1916 in Reasnor, IA, the fourth son of twelve children born to Rev. Forest and Ida Moore. He spent his boyhood in several communities in southeast Iowa and graduated from Kalona High School. J.P. was trained in commercial art at the Minneapolis (MN) School of Art and the Council Bluffs (IA) Beauty Academy. He married Hertha Irene Perry, February 28, 1939 in Council Bluffs, IA. They moved to Newton, IA in 1940 so J.P. could work for the Vernon Company. He was later employed by Newton Manufacturing and the Dunlap Company. He served all three organizations in their art departments. In August of 1943 J.P. enlisted in the army. He achieved the rank of sergeant assisting the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Engineer Corps in the Philippines during WWII. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, J.P. built some of the furniture for its chapel. He also created a portrait of Christ over the altar in the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church at Joetown, IA where his father was pastor. Artist Kay Ward undertook restoration of the painting in 2000. He was a member of the conservation group the Izaak Walton League and various ornithologist organizations. J.P., an avid bird-bander, was a well-known ornithologist. He was a past president of the Iowa Ornithologist Union and became owner/manager of the Newton Chicken Sexing Company. Among J.P.'s many other interests were camping, geology, lepidopterology (butterflies), collecting arrowheads, silk screen printing, Boy Scouts, oil painting, and wildlife photography. He had an outstanding private rock collection. It included polished rocks, geodes, and fossils, as well as his personally developed charts of the geological history of central Iowa. At the age of 51, on June 22, 1968, J.P. died of cancer in Newton. John Paul (J.P.) Moore was survived by his mother, eight brothers and two sisters, many nieces and nephews, his wife, his three sons and their wives, and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
