Seward Independent Democrat, Seward, NE, Dec 20, 1923 John Preston Martin was born in the state of New York in March 1843 and died at his home in Bigfork, Montana, December 12, 1923. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having entered the service a mere boy. His parents moved to Wisconsin while he was still a lad and the home was there for a number of years. While he was in Dodge county he was married to Miss Ellen McCoy. In 1869 the family moved to Nebraska, his parents settling on a homestead near McCook, York county, Nebraska and John on one near Beaver Crossing, where he lived for several years and later moved to the little village, where he owned and operated the Pearl flour mills. During the early days these people went through many hardships and did their part well in helping to settle this new country. On account of ill health a few years ago Mr. Martin disposed of his interest in the mill, moving to Bigfork, Montana. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, four daughters, Mrs. Maude Littlefield and Mrs. Tice Myers (two marriages) of Bigfork; Mrs. C. H. (Hattie) Myers of Logan, Iowa, and Mrs. Ray (Ella) Church of Fremont, Nebraska; two sons, Frank of Bigfork and R. E. of Buffalo, Wyoming; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Conway of York, Nebr. and two brothers, Richard of Custer county, Nebr. and Asa of Bigfork, and a host of old time friends and neighbors. The remains were brought here Saturday and funeral services were held Sunday at the home of his niece, Mrs. George H. Borden. Interment was made in the local cemetery beside his parents, a brother, Jerry, and two sisters, Mrs. O. Dimery and Mrs. Caroline Tidyman.
