Read More	JOHN RAPER IS AT REST Adair News, Friday April 26, 1901 OPERATION AT DES MOINES PROVED TOO MUCH FOR HIS WEAKENED CONDITION AND HE DIED THURSDAY Another old settler of Adair County, John Raper, received his final canons and passed to the land from where none return on Thursday of last week. As mentioned in "The News" last week, Mr. Raper was taken to Des Moines where an operation was performed and a large gravel removed. The last reports this paper received of the sick man last week were favorable, but later a reaction set in, and on Wednesday evening his wife was sent for, and the old gentleman succumbed to the inevitable as stated above. The remains were brought to Adair on Friday afternoon and taken to the home here in town where they remained until Saturday morning when they were carried to the friends church at Canby, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. smith, assisted by Rev. Pike. After the services at the church the remains were interred in the Friends' cemetery, which was given to the Church by the deceased. John Raper was born in Yorkshire, England, Oct. 30th, 1830, and died April 18th, 1901, age 70 years, 5 months and 19 days. He was married to Miss Myram Stephenson in August, 1851, and in the years of 1852 came to this country and settled in New York, N.Y., at which place he remained a short time and then located in Illinois and in 1874 he came to Adair County where he resided until his death. There was born to Mr. and Mrs. Raper eight children, seven of them are now living, a daughter Sarah Harry having died August 8th, 1887. She being at the time of her death a resident of Adair County, Iowa. Mr. Raper was converted in the winter of 1893 and became a member of the Friends' Church at Canby, Iowa, and since said time has been a constant and devout worker in his faith. Besides the wife and children left to mourn his loss, Mr. Raper leaves eighteen grandchildren. His life was devoted to his family and he was always kind and watchful of their welfare. John Raper was one of the earliest settlers of the country around Canby and he had accumulated a large tract of land in the vicinity. He retired several years ago, and moved to Adair to enjoy the fruits of his labors. He was always a worthy citizen, a good neighbor, and leaves many friends in despair to extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
