Read More	Taken from the Wessington Times Enterprise January 5, 1923 - courtesy of Alvin White AGED MAN DIES - - PROMINENT AND HIGHLY RESPECTED RESIDENT OF ROSE HILL ANSWERS THE SUMMONS OF THE DEATH ANGEL 1836-1922 Following an illness of several weeks duration, Mr. John Ross finally passed away at his home on upper Sand Creek about 8 o’clock Friday evening December 29, 1922. For a year or more he had been failing due almost entirely to advancing years and for a month or more past his family had realized that the end was gradually approaching. A large number of his numerous children had gathered at the home to be with him during his last days, the two daughters from Iowa and three sons and one daughter who live here all being present when the end came. John Ross was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, April 16, 1836, having reached the ripe old age of 86 years, 8 months and 13 days when called. He grew to manhood in his native land and in April 1862 was married to Elizabeth McLaughlin at West Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, remaining there until the fall of 1881 when the family moved to Iowa, coming on to his present home in Rose Hill township in 1901. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ross, three having preceded him in death, John, William and Bessie McGillvrey. Those living are Alex of Instow, Saskatchewan, Mrs. Duncan Robertson and Mrs. M.F. Brodie of LeMars, Iowa, Mrs. Frank Manker of Lamona, California, Mrs. W.A. Moat of Lomita, California, Mrs. William McGillvrey, Robert, Angus and Donald of the home community. Mr. Alex Ross of Rose Hill was a brother of the deceased and Mrs. Angus McInnis, of LeMars, Iowa, mother of John McInnis, was a sister. Mr. Ross was a man very highly respected by all who knew him, strictly honorable, in all his dealings and a power in the community for good. He was a religious mand and deeply interested in church work, and contributed largely toward the building and maintaining the church in his home community. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, the Rose Hill church being crowed to its capacity by the neighbors and friends. Rev. Johnson preached the service and the male quartette from Wessington sang. To the widow and the sons and daughters, the sincere sympathy of the community is extended. They can take great comfort from the knowledge that his life was well lived, crowned with the accomplishments of all those high and noble aims, for which men usually strive. -from the John Ross family archive -by Tim Tone _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ JOHN ROSS, WELL KNOWN HERE, DIES IN DAKOTA John Ross, a former well known resident of Plymouth county, died at his home, in Wessington, S. D., on Friday, December 29. He had been in failing health for about a couple of months, due principally to old age. Previous to his last illness he enjoyed rugged health all his life, being over ninety years of age. He came to Plymouth county in 1881 from Cape Breton, Canada, with a number of his countrymen who settled near Crathorne where he lived for a number of years. He moved from here to South Dakota about twenty four years ago. He is survived by his wife and several sons and daughters who are Alex Ross, Saskatchewan, Mrs. Duncan Robertson, Crathorne, Mrs. M. F. Brodie, Le Mars, Robert Ross, Angus Ross, Mrs. Wm. McGilvery, Donald Ross, of Wessington, S. D., Mrs. H. Manker, Artesia, California, Mrs. Arthur Moat, of Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada. The funeral was held on Sunday at the Presbyterian church at Wessington and interment made at that place. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Robertson went to attend the funeral.
