Ross, a resident of Portland township for about eighty-four years, passed away Friday evening, July 9, 1948, at 11:45 o'clock, at his home, north of town, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 15 days. He had been suffering from a heart condition for the past year, but had felt well enough last Friday to visit his nephew, Dan Smith, a patient in the Akron Hospital, and did some shopping. His sudden demise came as a shock to relatives and friends alike. Walter William Ross was born September 24, 1862, at Owatonna, Minnesota, and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Ross, and family to this community when he was only one and a half years of age. He has resided here ever since. He was married on November 12, 1887, to Myrtle Taggart. Their union was blessed with one daughter and four sons. Surviving him are his wife, Myrtle, and the five children, Vera Jacobson, of Akron; Guy of Westfield, L. D. and Earl, of Akron, and Ted of Richmond, Calif.; also by 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert, of Akron, and one sister, Mrs. Susan Hardy, of Ontario, California. Mr. Ross engaged in farming, stock raising and feeding over a period of many years. He took an active part in the civic affairs of his community, serving a number of years as the board of trustees in Portland township. He affiliated with Freedom lodge, No. 434, A. F. & A.M., of Akron, in March, 1904, and had held continuous membership in the lodge. The pioneer resident will be missed by his many friends who extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Orville Nelson, the pastor, "hymns were sung by a male quartet comprised of Arden Johnson, J. R. Shoulberg, Clifford Johnson and Harry B. Nelson, with Mrs. Harry B. Nelson as accompanist. The pallbearers were H. Shoulberg, Max Pollock, Orlan C. Moore, Ernest Lucken, Porter Maynard and Frank F. McElhaney, Members of the Masonic order attended the services in a body and participated in the burial rites at Riverside cemetery, with Eugene Lias giving the impressive Masonic graveside oration. Among the relatives attending the funeral froma distance were: Ted Ross, of Richmond, Calif.; Mrs. J. M. Ross and T. A. Ross, of Sioux City.
