Grooms John Samuel Grooms was born February 2, 1853 at Quitman, Mo., where he grew to manhood. He was married September 7, 1877, to Rebecca Ann Osbourne (Osburn). To this union were born eleven children, four of whom have preceded the father in death. Had Mr. Grooms lived until September of this year, he and his wife would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They came to Sparks 44 years ago and have lived in this vicinity ever since, 12 years having been spent in Valentine. When Mr. Grooms was a young man of twenty-two years of age he joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Quitman, Mo. Like many of us he did not walk as close to the Lord all of those years and during his last illness, when the family were all about his bedside he reconsecrated his life to his Master and found joy and satisfaction in the reading of the word and prayers of those who came to see him. For more than 19 months he has been afflicted, but through it all was a patient sufferer. The end came quietly Sunday afternoon July 10, 1927, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 7 days. He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, two sons, Fred R. of Sparks and James Edgar (Edgar James) of Kewanee; five daughters; Mrs. William Allen of Sparks, Mrs. William Epke of Valentine, Mrs. Richard Taylor of Valentine, Mrs. Bryan Meredith of Fremont, and Mrs. James G. Simms of Fremont; four brothers, Aaron of Valentine, Jacob of Montana, Newton of Los Angeles, Calif., and Robert of Wyoming; twenty-three grandchildren and two great grandchildren and his many friends.--Contributed. Funeral services were held at Sparks Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Roy N. Spooner of this city officiating, and were largely attended. Interment was in the Sparks cemetery.
