Description	:	A native of Hanover, Germany, John Schwada, Sr. came to the United States in 1851 as a stowaway. At 17, he was nearing the age when he would be required to serve in the Furher's Army, so he chose to leave Germany instead. John's mother and sisters supplied him with food for the trip, but he was discovered while the ship was at sea. At 17, he was nearing the age when he would be required to serve in the Furher's Army, so he chose to leave Germany instead. John's mother and sisters supplied him with food for the trip, but he was discovered while the ship was at sea. Fortunately, his presence was accepted by the crew who fed him for the remainder of the trip. John had an older brother who already lived in America. John married a fellow German native, Clara Mary Neaman, in 1859 in Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana. 6 years later, they moved from Indiana to a location 7 miles north of Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri. They were among the first settlers in what is now known as the Ebenezer Community. John was a farmer, and they were the parents of 9 children. John and Clara were charter members of Ebenezer Evangelical Church. The Schwada children were educated at Rawson School, a short distance northwest of the family home. The Schwadas' son, John William, eventually was a teacher there. The Schwadas' oldest child, Emma, married John Mitts in 1882. They were the parents of 1 child when Emma's husband died of tuberculosis around 1884. She then married George Wilky on 10 Aug 1886 and moved to Arizona. Emma died in 1888 at the age of 27. When John and Clara retired from living on the farm and raising livestock, they sold the property to their son, Henry, and moved to Clarence, Missouri. John's wife, Clara, died of pneumonia in 1921. John lived until 1926. He died of an infection at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 16 days. He was survived by 5 sons, Henry, John, Frank, Leslie and Will; 3 daughters, Flora, Mary Ann and Louise; 31 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents and 1 daughter, Emma Wilky. Funeral services were conducted at Center Street Methodist Church on 19 Jan 1926. He was buried next to his wife, Clara. Children: 5 sons, 4 daughters. John Schwada and wife celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding, Dec. 1st, 1909, with their children, who came in on a surprise, through the rain (just as it rained fifty years ago), so said Father Schwada. In spite of the gloom and clouds on the outside, all was bright and sunshiny on the inside. While the happy couple were making all feel at home and comfortable, the daughters spread a bountiful dinner, and all did it justice. Mr. Jno. Schwada was born in 1835 [sic] and Mrs. Schwada in 1939. Mr. and Mrs. Schwada have been loyal members of the Evangelical church for 35 years. They formerly lived in the Ebenezer community, and now they reside in Clarence, Mo. Its useless to speak of their worth, as their life speaks louder than words. Those present were as follows: Henry Schwada, wife and two sons, John Schwada, wife and daughter, Leslie Schwada, wife, son and daughter, Frank Schwada, W.E. Roy, wife and daughter, James Mitts and wife, J.M. Long and wife, Rev. Wm. Russell and family. William, the youngest son, who resides in Oklahoma, was absent. Father and Mother Schwada have been very fortunate to see their children so comfortably situated in life. The family tie has been broken but once in the death of their oldest daughter, Mrs. Emma Wilkey. Mr. and Mrs. Schwada were the recipients of some beautiful and useful presents, presented to them by their children. He came to the United States in 1851 locating in Rising Sun, Indiana, where he was united in marriage to Clara Neaman in 1859. To this union were born 9 children; Emma Wilka [sic], who entered the Great Beyond several years ago; Henry; Mrs. Flora Mitts; Mrs. Mary Long; John; Frank; Mrs. Louise Roy; Leslie; these all living in or near Clarence; and Willie living in Tyrone, Oklahoma. Mr. and Mrs. Schwada came to Shelby County, Missouri, in 1865, locating seven miles north of Clarence, now known as the Ebenezer community. They were among the first settlers there and aided greatly in the development of the community. Mrs. Schwada preceded her husband to the better land five years ago. He was converted in early life and became a charter member of the Ebenezer Evangelical church, in which he held his membership until death. In his Christian life, his faith enabled him to live on the victory side, always true to his church and Christian obligations. This had as its foundation as expressed by the Apostle, "A life hid with Christ in God." The same faith was manifest up to the moment of his death, when he rejoiced in the hope of meeting the Savior, Whom he served and the loved ones who had gone before where separations do not come. Those who knew him longest and best are the most assured of his soul's eternal abode with the Christ whom he loved. A father in Israel has been taken; may we imitate his virtue and share in the heavenly reward. Beside his 8 children he leaves to mourn his departure, 31 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Center Street Methodist church conducted by Rev. S. Knupp, assisted by Rev. Chas. Reep. Burial in Maplewood cemetery. (Shelby County newspaper; Jan 1926)
