Once more Death has invaded the home of one of Richardson county's pioneer families and on Wednesday of last week the spirit of Uncle John Stalder took its flight. Mr. Stalder homesteaded the farm on which he died in Speiser precinct, south of this city, in 1857, sixty years ago, at a time when naught but barren prairie greeted the eye of him who had the courage to face the trials and hardships that was ever the portion of those who were the first to invade a new country. But he was imbued with the spirit of determination, self-sacrifice and a willingness to meet "what "ere might betide," and the result was that he witnessed with an ever increasing interest the transformation of a barren but fertile waste into a garden of plenty. About a week previous to his demise Mr. Stalder suffered a paralytic stroke and owing to his advanced age, 87 years, 1 month and 11 days, his frail constitution was unable to withstand the shock, and he passed away as stated above. John Stalder was born in Canton Berne, Switzerland, January 2, 1831, and came to America when he was twenty-two years of age, in 1853. The first two years of life in his adopted country was spent in Ohio, from where he moved to St. Joseph, Mo., where he was employed for the following two years, and from there came to Nebraska, settling on the farm that was destined to remain his home for the balance of a long and useful life. Mr. Stalder was twice married and was the father of a family of twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, all of whom survive: Mrs. David Wittwer of Humboldt, Albert Stalder of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Simon Hoffman, Humboldt, J. B. Stalder of Pleasant Hill, Mo., Fred Stalder of Guthrie, Okla., Emil Stalder, Mrs. James Rist, Henry, Frank and Joseph, all residing in this vicinity, and Andy and Miss Rosa at home. All of the children were present at the last sad obsequies except Albert of Los Angeles and Fred of Guthrie. Funeral services were held at the Four Mile church Friday last, conducted by the pastor, and the remains were interred in the church cemetery. VOL. 36 Humboldt, Nebraska, Friday-?
