Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church, southwest of Brooks, Tuesday afternoon at 2 conducted by Rev. W. C. McClelland. Interment will be made in the Methodist Grove Cemetery. Mr. Stalder was born in Switzerland. He was married to Miss Mary Schell, of Ohio, about 50 years ago. To this union were born seven children, two of whom Ed and Addie Stalder, preceded the father in death. Besides his wife, Mr. Stalder is survived by his five children, all of whom live in the vicinity of Brooks. They are Fred J, Burt, W. O., and J. C. Stalder, and Mrs. F. A. Hedinger. Mr. Stalder was one of the fine men of the community and had a large circle of friends. He had not been well for a time, but his passing away was sudden and rather unexpected. He had been a resident of Brooks for many years. Friends extend sympathy to the mourning ones. Adams County Free Press, Corning, Iowa, Wednesday, October 22, 1919, page 12 On Tuesday morning, October 21, 1919, there passed away in his home in Brooks, Iowa, one of our respected citizens and cordial neighbors, John Stalder, who had been a resident of Adams county for the past 37 years. He was an example of that thrift which seems to 'be inherent in many of the foreign born emigrants who have come to America's shores to seek a home. Starting with limited resources he lived, not ,only to acquire a reasonable competence for himself and wife for declining years, but also to see each of his five living children comfortably located in homes of their own. Declining health, largely incident to age, had been slowly stealing upon him. At last the end came very suddenly and and somewath unexpectedly, but most ideally, for it was apparently without a sigh or pain. The deceased was a native of Blumenstein, Canton Berne, Switzerland. He was horn-October 11, 1847. When eight years of age he came with his parents to America, locating in Monroe county, Ohio, where on February 24, 1872, he was married to Mary L. Schell. (The following year he came with his wife they lived in Nebraska where they lived for nine years, thence moving to Adams County, where they have since resided. Eight children came to bless the Stalder home, three of whom are deceased. The living are Fred J., Burt C., William Q., James C., and Mrs. Ella G. Hedinger all living in Adams County. The widow also survives. Sixteen grandchildren are living. The deceased has also one sister and two brothers living in Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Rose Walter, residing near Brooks. In 1863 Mr. Stalder united with the Reformed Church in Monroe County, Ohio. Then in 1904 he became a communicant in the Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian, in which fellowship he remained until summoned to his reward. On October 31, 1919, a faithful husband, a good father, a Christian and a well respected neighbor passed to the beyond, aged 72 years, 10 days. We cherish his memory and would practice his virtues. The funeral services were conducted from the Mt. Zion church, Thursday afternoon by Rev. W. C. Borst, or the Brooks M. E. church.
