He came to America with his parents in 1842 when he was four years old, and traveled with them through the years until they reached California in 1859. It is recorded in the "AMERICAN FORK WARD RECORD" files of the Mormon Church that "John Taylor Filcher went to fight in the Echo Canyon War in 1857"-he was 19 years old at that time. There is one reference to him in Joseph Adams Filcher's "Looking Back" articles of 1922-1923. He tells of his older brother standing up for him near Placerville, California, where the wagon train had stopped for the night. Joseph, who had just turned 13 in August, had herded the train's stock during the entire trek west. On this particular stop, Joseph was accused by a Mr. Faulkner of purposely leaving a cow behind as it did not come into camp with the others after feeding nearby. He began to vent his wrath on the young boy and to continue in Joseph's words: "My older brother took up the quarrel, called Faulkner all kinds of liar and pulling his pistol threatened to feed his body to the buzzards if he ever heard him cursing me again. While they were quarreling the cow came in" Together the two brothers "cooked up a plan" where Joseph would only return the family's stock the following morning. As the men stood ready with the "yokes on their shoulders and one bow drawn ready to yoke up their oxen" the family "heads" were so shocked they stood around as though not knowing what to do next. There was little talk. Some came up and "congratulating my brother said he had done just the right thing". As a result of this episode, the family had a headstart and traveled the rest of the way alone (taking a longer, different route) into the Sacramento Valley. "...and some of those people we never saw again, and some I have never heard of." The first season at the rented farm at Eliza (a small town about 3 miles south of Marysville), John drove the team of horses and the younger boys the team of oxen, when they planted the first crops in the fall and spring of their first year in California. He probably worked the Dry Creek ranch, as well, until he left home about 1861. Again Joseph records: "...my older brother left about this time and struck out for himself and my father(Thomas) being a heavy man and rather corpulent not built for farming, put heavier responsibilities on me and increased my work..." John Taylor married Mary Ann Nevlis on October 4, 1863, probably in California because their first child was born in Marysville, California. In the next 19 years she bore him eight children: 1.)Eliza Adeline, 1865-1885, never married, born: probably Marysville; burial location unknown. 2.)Ralph Adams, 1867-1925, married Lucy Holt, born: Marysville 3.)Thomas Joseph, 1870-1875, birthplace unknown; burial location unknown 4.)Charles William, 1872-1876, birthplace unknown; (Find A Grave memorial # 65149749) 5.)Jennie Emma, 1876-????, married Charles Zang, Jr. 6.)Joseph Decatur, 1878-1940, married Jessie Taylor, born: Santa Rosa 7.)John Enoch, 1881-1884, birthplace unknown; burial location unknown. Possible burial location in Old Auburn Cemetry, Auburn, California, see Find-a-Grave Memorial#47924583 8.)Maude Irene, 1884-????, married Arthur Mills, born: Butte, MT. From the above known birth records it would appear that John Taylor moved his family to Montana sometime between 1878 and 1884, as there is record of his last child being born there. Why he moved or under what circumstances is not known. However, the family comments to my generation, led me (Josephine Filcher Delmar) to believe that John Taylor went to Montana and was "lost" to the California family. In a letter from Roy Dean Filcher of Tulare, CA, his comment, in 1973, was: "One brother (John Taylor) disappeared and many years later was located in Montana." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ralph Emmett Filcher's writing reveals that John Taylor was an adventurous type: "He started on an oddessy of his own which took him up the California Trail to it's juncture with the Oregon Trail near present day American Falls, Idaho. He signed Register Rock there on July 4, 1880. He moved on to Butte, MT, on a trip that has been said to have lasted 101 days. In 1889, after working there for a time he moved his family to Boulder, MT and the family finally settled into a home of their own. He had worked in Butte, MT as a skimmer (hot work) in the old Boston and Montana smelters, in the mines in Boulder, and later as a prospector and developer of mines. He apparently became involved in buying, developing and speculating on mining properties in the Boulder area. Many transactions are recorded in the Jefferson County Courthouse, Montana, which show expensive properties traded.
