He and his brother Ralph Adams were the only two sons to survive to adulthood. Joseph was the baby in the family on the family's trek to Montana. He attended a business college in Butte, MT, and became a bookeeper in the Birdseye store in Avon for several years, later a deputy sheriff in Boulder, MT, and bookeeper at the Boulder Mercantile and Postmaster for a time. He and his father were very active in the Boulder Masonic Lodge. He married Jessie Margaret Taylor and that marriage produced 3 children: Mary Charlotte Filcher, b. 1910, d. 1972 Warren "Bill" Nevles Filcher, b. 1912, d. 1982 Josephine Isabel Filcher, b. 1915, d. 2016 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following is from MONTANA, IT'S STORY AND BIOGRAPHY, Vol 3, page 1140, History of Montana: Joe D. Filcher has been a Montana resident for thirty years or more, grew up in this state and has had a varied experience in commercial and public affairs at Boulder, and is serving as the present Postmaster of that city. Mr. Filcher was born at Santa Rosa, California on November 7, 1878. His father John Taylor Filcher who was born in Staffordshire, England in 1838 was brought to this country by his parents in 1842. The family lived for several years in Ohio (this should read Iowa)and later moved to Marysville, California. John T. Filcher recieved his education in those two states, was married at Marysville and became a silk maker by trade. He moved to Santa Rosa in 1875, continued in his business there, and in 1880 settled in Montana. For several years he was employed as a skimmer at the blast furnace in the smelters at Butte, and in 1889 moved to Boulder, and was one of the early residents of that city. He was a prospector for gold, lead silver and copper. He died at Boulder in 1906. Politically he was a Democrat, was a member of the Christian Church and was affiliated with the Masonic fraternity. He married Mary Nevelles who was born in Arkansas in 1847, and is now living at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A brief record of their children is as follows: Eliza, who died at the age of nineteen; Ralph, employed at the Gas Works in Butte; Thomas who died at the age of four years; Charles, who died at the age of eight; Jennie E., wife of Charles Zang, a contractor and builder at Calgary, Canada; Joe D. Enoch, who died at the age of six years;and Maude, wife of Thomas Mills, of Helena, assistant to the Chief Clerk of the Montana Division of the Railway Mail service. Joe D. Filcher attended school at Butte on year, at Comet in Jefferson county, two years and graduated from Boulder High School in 1896. Later he took a special course in bookkeeping at the Butte Business College from which he was graduated in 1900. Mr. Filcher's working experience covers nearly a quarter of a century. For three years, he worked in the mines around Butte, for two years was bookkeeper at Avon for the Birdseye Mercantile Company, was clerk with the Boulder Mercantile Company four years, during 1910 was appointed and served as deputy sheriff under Sheriff A.V. Gibson. He then resumed his work with the Boulder Mercantile Company, remaining with that establishment until 1918. For over a year, Mr. Filcher was deputy sheriff under the present Sheriff, T.L. Locker, but resigned in September,1919 to accept the appointment of Postmaster at Boulder, and is now giving all his time to the efficient administration of the local Post Office. He also served as Alderman of the Second Ward and resigned that office to become Postmaster. Mr. Filcher is a Republican. He is a member of the Boulder School Board, owns a modern home in that city, and is considered one of the community's most substantial and public spirited residents. In 1908, at Butte, he married Miss Jessie Taylor. Her father, J.K. Taylor, is an honored old time resident of Boulder and Montana. He was born in South Carolina in 1854 and lived in his native state to the age of twenty five. On coming to Montana in 1879 he engaged in at Gregory, and since 1904 has lived at Boulder. For many years he was a carpenter and a builder. He married Charlotte Marie Smith, who was born at Portsmouth, Ohio, March 31, 1865. Mrs. Filcher is the third in a family of nine children. The oldest of them, Ruby Charlotte Taylor, is the wife of Robert Tedford, a farmer at Santa Ana, California; John Keene Taylor, a resident of Boulder; James Bannon enlisted in June 1918, for four years as a sailor, and is now with the United States battleship Maine; Orin M. Taylor owns a meat market at Boulder; Isabelle is the wife of Clyde Darby a tractor engineer living at Boulder; Lewis Gregory is a butcher by trade and lives at Butte; Arthur H. is a student at the Law Department of the University of Michigan, while Grover C., the youngest, graduated from Boulder High School in 1919. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the Helena Daily Independent, Sunday, October 6, 1940: Joseph D. Filcher, esteemed Boulder resident passed away here last evening while attending to his duties as janitor at the Jefferson County High School. Death was attributed to heart attack. Mr. Filcher was born, November 7, 1878 in California and came to Montana with his parents when a small child. They lived at Comet for a short time later moving to Boulder where Mr. Filcher has resided continously. He attended the Boulder public schools and was a graduate of Jefferson County High School with one of the first classes to graduate. He later worked as a grocery clerk, served as Postmaster for a number of years, acted as a Deputy Sheriff and at the time of his passing, he was Justice of the Peace for Boulder. He was married to Miss Jessie Taylor on August 20, 1908. He was a member of the Boulder Masonic Lodge. His passing will be greatly mourned by his many friends throughout Boulder and Jefferson county. Surviving relatives besides his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Allan Lund of Reno, Nevada; and Mrs. Edgar Brown of Jefferson City, a son William Filcher of Santa Barbara and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Zang of Alameda, California and Mrs. Thomas Mills of Helena and four grandchildren.
