Tattan, judge of the Twelfth Montana judicial district for the last quarter of a century and prominent figure in Montana legal circles for fifty years, died here last night after an illness of several months. The shock of his wife's death in June, 1925, followed by a fall in October, which had confined him to his bed since, contributed to the judge's death. The Tattans had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary a few days before Mrs. Tattan's death. John W. Tattan was born in Middleton, County Cork, Ireland, May 27, 1847, and came to the United States when 18 years old. He settled in Montana, following the engineering profession, until 1870, when he enlisted in the United States army and came to Fort Benton. He was elected probate judge at Fort Benton in 1875 after his honorable discharge from the service. He was admitted to the bar in 1877. In 1899 he was elected county attorney. Two years later he was appointed to the bench and served as judge continuously until his death. His daughter, Mrs. C.W. Morrison, of Fort Benton, died in 1923. A son, John J. Tattan, formerly of Glasgow, but now of Fort Benton, survives.
