Read More	DEATH OF JOHN WHAN OLD SOLDIER AND RESPECTED CITIZEN DIES AFTER PROLONGED ILLNESS John When, an old soldier and a respected citizen of Villisca for many years, died at his home in the south part of this city, Friday afternoon, March 20, 1914, at 1:35 o’clock. Death was ascribed to cancer of the liver and followed a prolonged illness. Mr. Whan was 66 years, 5 months, and 10 days of age. He had been afflicted presumably with some kind of bladder trouble and was operated upon for the affliction last December, in the Methodist Hospital in Omaha. He was unable to work of late and finally had a sale of his farm effects, and all that loving hands could do to stay the progress of the Grim Reaper was done, but to no avail. He is survived by Mrs. Whan and seven children; George of Creston; Roy, Linn, Will, Mrs. Frank Moritz, Mrs. Guy Moritz, and Mrs. Ed Noble of Villisca. Mr. Whan was born at Athens, Ohio, October 10, 1847. His father was a farmer, and both father and son enlisted at the time of the Civil War, the latter joining Company E. of the 174th Ohio Infantry and serving eleven months. At the close of the war, Mr. Whan moved to Champaign, Illinois, where on November 7, 1870, he was married to Miss Emma McKinley. They came to Burlington, Iowa in the spring of 1874 and lived there five years, moving from there to Villisca where they have lived continuously since with the exception of three years spent in Minnesota. Mr. Whan was a prominent member of the G.A.R. Post of this city, and he did much to promote the welfare of this order. His passing will be most generally mourned. The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church in Villisca, Sunday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. S. Menoher. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Among those from out of town who were present were; his son, George of Creston; his sister, Mrs. Eva Coslett and son Lee of Riverton, Iowa; his aunt, Mrs. Eliza Forward of Red Oak; his cousin, Fred Comfort and wife of Creston; his cousin, Will Stipes of Clarinda; and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Horton of Creston. The services were conducted in part by the G.A.R. Post and ladies of the John A. Logan Circle, and were largely attended. Villisca Review, Thursday, March 28th, 1914, page 1
