Read More	St. Edward Advance: EARLY PIONEER GOES TO HIS FINAL REST John Wesley Devore, son of John DeVore and Anna Catherine Mowell DeVore, was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, February 17, 1848, and died at St. Edward, Nebraska, Thursday, July 25, 1935, aged 87 years. His early boyhood years, together with his four brothers and one sister, were spent in the rural communities of Ohio and Indiana where his parents pioneered before removing to Indian Creek Township, Mills County, Iowa, in 1857, where a new home was established and they again joined in the upbuilding of another community. He was united in marriage to Florence N. VanVleet on November 27, 1872, in Mills County, Iowa. In March, 1884, they together with their four eldest children, Edward, Royal, Maude and Carl, came to St. Edward, Nebraska, for in those days the movement of pioneers was ever to the West, and new frontiers. For half a century and more, St. Edward and vicinity has been the home of Mr. DeVore and his family, the youngest son, Glenn, being born at St. Edward in November, 1887. In the earlier years, Father DeVore took an active part in all community affairs, both religious and social. In his younger years he belonged to the Lutheran faith, but there being no church of that denomination here at the time of his arrival, he like all the other denominations: Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, worshipped at services held in the old Baptist Seminary building located at that time on the corner of one of the lots contained in the present home of Mr. DeVore. He later became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, faithfully taking up the duties assigned him. One night during his recent illness, when his mind wandered back to the old days, he faithfully taught his Sunday School class and quoted passages from the Scripture. In his passing, the members of his family and his many friends, both old and new, feel the benediction of his daily association among them and will always cherish his kindly counsels, which were always in favor of the right. Funeral services for Mr. DeVore were held from the Methodist church at St. Edward, conducted by Rev. W.W. Hall, Saturday morning, July 27, at 10:30 All of the children, with the exception of Glenn who has lived in Canada for these many years, were in attendance at the services. Six grandsons, Gerald DeVore, St. Edward, Elmer DeVore, Schuyler, Evan, Francis, Kenneth and Willis Jones of Omaha, acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Evergreen Cemetery.
