Read More	St. Edward Advance August 30, 1951 DeVore Services Held last Thursday William Edmund DeVore, eldest son of J. W. and Florence N. DeVore, was born in Mills County, Iowa, near Henderson, May 25, 1876. He moved with his parents to St. Edward, Nebraska in March 1884. Ed and his father drove the wagon and led the cows while the rest of the family and household goods came on the train. Some of his earliest memories were of the family's living in the hotel until they found lodging with Joel Berry's family in the northwest part of St. Edward, and of his special task of delivering butter, cream, and eggs to the Genoa Indian School staff kitchen where his aunt, Nettie, was in charge. Because he was under 12 years of age, he could ride free on the train. There were several trains each direction daily and he could make at least two round trips. He attended the local school and finished the tenth grade which was the highest level at that time. He went to school in the late fall, winter, and early spring as was the custom for the boys who shared family responsibilities and "worked out". As a young man he was employed at the mill for several years delivering flour by team and wagon. He was employed at the brickyard for a time, packing the molds and tending the fire needed to process the clay into bricks. At the turn of the century, he was carrying the mail on rural routes in a team and buggy. In June 1906, he was married to Miss Olive May McFarland, and to them one son, Elmer P. DeVore, was born. Mrs. DeVore passed away shortly after the birth of the son. After Olive Mae's death, Elmer was cared for by J.W. and Florence and Ed farmed north of St. Edward and boarded at the Boone House. In April 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Blanche W. Butler, and to them two daughters, Lucretia Marece and Alta Louise, were born. Alta Louise died in infancy. He was elected road overseer for North Beaver precinct and served in that capacity for about twenty years. During much of that period, horse drawn drags, maintainers, and graders were used. He served on the school board of Dist. 5 (Dogtown) for 15 years, and also worked at the Boone County Fair for many years. Ed liked horses and was never thoroughly convinced that tractors would replace them on the farm. He preferred horseback riding and team and wagon transportation over automobiles. When Model Ts were no longer available, Ed rode with Blanche, refusing to drive. His bobsled, prancing team with sleighbells, and fur coated driver, braved many a winter's cold wind and snow, taking neighbors to town and church, collecting children and teachers along the route to school. At times, that dependable "rig" was used to deliver medical supplies, sometimes as an ambulance, and hearse. His "trademarks" were his friendliness, neighborliness, an unlighted cigar, and his high spirited horses.....quite often tied to a downtown hitching post waiting impatiently as he finished a game of pitch or cribbage. Mr. DeVore passed away after a short illness, August 20, 1951, at the age of seventy-five years, and three months. Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon from the Methodist church with Rev. Bert Bessire in charge. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery.
