Obituary: Leon Reporter December 2l, l893 J.W. WALLACE, the subject of this sketch, was born in the city of Belfast, County Antrim, North Ireland, in l8l4, and died at the home of his son, S.W. WALLACE in Leon, on Dec. l2,l893, aged 79 years. MR. WALLACE came to America in l826 with his father, landing at Quebec,Canada, after a voyage of nine weeks on the Atlantic Ocean. From there he went to New York City, and with his father, (PETER WALLACE), one of the early residents of Decatur County, engaged in the weaving business which trade they had followed in the old country. After remaining in New York for ten years, he located at Pittsburgh, Pa., but returned to New York in short time, and then went to Ohio, where he resided for l2 years, close to New Liston, the county seat of Columbiana County. In l85l, they emigrated to Iowa, taking the steamboat Allouia, which was her first trip, and at that time was the largest and finest boat on the river, to St. Louis, thence to Keokuk, and then to Libertyville, in Jefferson County, where his brother-in-law, WM. CLARK lived. After residing there for three years, he came to Decatur County in l854, settling in Woodland Township, where he lived on the old home place until about three years ago, since which time he had resided with his son, S.W. WALLACE in Leon. During his long residence in Woodland Township he enjoyed the friendship of a large circle of friends, and almost constantly filled the various township offices, being Treasurer for many years, up to the time he removed from the township. He married to MISS MARY MUNSON in New York City in l835, and to their union were born l3 children, nine of whom are living. His wife died in this county about 20 years ago. The children who survive are S.D.WALLACE, Creston; J.D. WALLACE, Kansas City; GEO. H. WALLACE, Woodland; S.W. WALLACE, Leon; MRS. MARGARET TREMBLY; MRS. MARY ANN BARRETT, Keokuk; MRS. ELIZABETH FLYNN, Woodland; MRS. CATHARINE TOFFTIE, St.Louis; MRS. CHARLOTTE FARNS, of Leon.
