Early, 59, Dies At Fairfield FAIRFIELD. - John William Early, 59, division maintenance engineer of the Iowa state highway commission and a resident of Fairfield for 24 years, died of a heart attack Sunday at 1:20 a.m. in his home, 1007 South Main street. He was president of the city board of education, a position he had held for a number of years. As a member of the school board, he gave liberally of his time and ability in the planning of Fairfield's half-million-dollar high school erected in 1939. Mr. Early was a member of the First Methodist church, of the Evergreen Cemetery association, of the Rotary club, of Clinton lodge A.F. & A.M., Fairfield chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, of the Fairfield Elks and of the Girl Scouts building committee. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the First Methodist church conducted by Dr. Lloyd Scheerer of Des Moines, a former pastor, as Dr. L.L. Weis, present pastor, is on vacation out of the city. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Early was born November 30, 1892, in Hillsboro, the son of Orr and Clara B. Campbell Early. His education was received in the Hillsboro schools, Iowa Wesleyan college and Iowa State college. He has been employed by the state highway commission 26 years. Mr. Early was married twice. Several years after the death of his first wife, he married Miss Mabel Leech of Fairfield on July 30, 1932 who with a daughter, Miss Nancy Joan Early, a student nurse in the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines, survives, as does one granddaughter Nancy Jo of Fairfield, and his aged father, Orr Early of Hillsboro. An only son, Capt. Joe Early, U.S. air force, was killed in action in World war II. His mother and a brother, John C. Early, preceded him in death.
