Description	:	JOHN W. LOY DEAD John W. Loy of Americus Township, died this morning at 7:30 o'clock. He has been sick for the past three months, and his death was expected every day for the past week. He was 74 years of age. The funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church of Americus Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. Funston. Read More	JOHN W. LOY DEAD John W. Loy of Americus Township, died this morning at 7:30 o'clock. He has been sick for the past three months, and his death was expected every day for the past week. He was 74 years of age. The funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church of Americus Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. Funston. Mr. Loy was born in Perry county, Pa., February 26, 1830 [sic]. He remained there until he was 17, when he moved to Indiana, where he lived until 1852 when the news of the discovery of gold in California attracted him to that state. For the next three years he ran a fruit ranch and then returned to the east by way of the Isthmus of Panama and New York. He then located in Minnesota where he lived until 1860, when he moved to Kansas and settled near Americus. In 1861 he bought the John McClellan farm of 480 acres and lived there until 1870 when he purchased the farm of 80 acres, a half mile from Americus, on which he was living at the time of his death. Mr. Loy was a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist church and was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. He was a member of the state legislature in 1863-1875-76-78, and in 1881 was appointed a member of the Normal board of regents, which position he held for four years. He enlisted in the Eleventh Kansas militia and was made a lieutenant, serving during the Price raid, and in several campaigns against the Indians. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. and the A.F. & A.M. lodges. He was married to Miss Jane Hodson, of Livingston county, Ill., in 1856, and of this union five children were born, one of whom, Harvey Loy, a member of the hardware firm of Loy & McDill is living in Emporia. His first wife died several years ago and he was married again two years ago, his second wife surviving him. He was a member of the board of county commissioners from 18?? to 1887 and made his last public appearance as chairman of the Republican convention last spring. In his death Lyon county loses one of her most substantial and respected citizens--a man whose word was as good as his bond and whose good judgment in business affairs was unquestioned. His kindness and generosity to the unfortunate won him many friends, and his long and active life as a public officer is proof of his standing among the people who knew him best. ~The Emporia Gazette, Monday, 31 Oct 1904
