Lenning Passed Away Sunday Night. Was Superintendent of Fort Benton Schools For Over 30 Years; Well Known Over the State Friends, both young and old will be grieved to learn of the passing of Jonas W. Lenning, of this city, at the St. Clare hospital on Sunday evening about 11:30 p.m. Death was caused by heart trouble from which he had been suffering severely for the past few weeks. He was unable to complete the last term of school and was confined to his bed a couple weeks before the close. He had not been in good health for the past several months. Mr. Lenning was one of the best known school men in the state and had possibly served longer in the capacity of superintendent of schools here than any other Montanan living today. He came to Fort Benton on Dec. 31, 1904, and began his position as superintendent of city schools on Jan. 2, 1905, a position he held at the time of his death. For a number of years during this time he had charge of both the grade and the high school until the Chouteau County high school was formed. After the county high school was voted out two years ago he was again named as superintendent of both schools. Mr. Lenning had added greatly to the cause of education in Montana and during his residence here he has built up the standard of our schools second to none in the state. Always interested in the school problems he made these a part of his daily life and devoted all of his energy to their building up. Mr. Lenning was a keen business man and owned a number of residential properties in this city and several ranches nearby. Before coming to Fort Benton he taught school at White Sulphur Springs and at Marysville, Mont. He devoted more than half his lifetime to his work. J. W. Lenning was born in Worthington, county of Green, state of Indiana, in 1872, the son of Doss Anderson Lenning and Philonia Kidd Lenning. He spent his early life in that state and attended the grade schools at Terra Haute, Indiana, and was a graduate of Indiana State Normal school. As a young man Mr. Lenning thought of a military career as a commissioned officer and enlisted in the regular army of the United States in Company A of the 2nd Infantry and at the age of 19 was stationed at Fort Keogh, Mont., where typhoid fever overtook him and put him in the hospital for nine months after which he received an honorable discharge for disability. From the army he went to Dillon and attended the normal school where he worked his way throughout the entire course of four years. Upon his graduation he took up the profession of teaching and followed it for over 40 years in Montana. While at Dillon he met a classmate, Miss Clara Wagy, and the two were married at the home of the bride's parents in Corvallis, Mont., Nov. 28th, 1901. Mr. Lenning was then teaching in White Sulphur Springs. From there they moved to Marysville where he also taught, and came to Fort Benton on Dec. 31, 1904. Mrs. Lenning passed away in 1910. He was united in marriage on Nov. 1914, to Miss Bertha Morrow, of this city, and to this union one son, Fred, was born, both of whom survive him. He is also survived by relatives in the east. Funeral services will be held from the Episcopal church in this city on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The body will be laid to rest in Riverside cemetery in the family plot there to await resurrection morn. In his death, Fort Benton an Chouteau county and Montana have lost a good, tried and true friend. The relatives have the deepest sympathy of everyone in the county in their hour of great sorrow over the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. .......... The Dillon Tribune (MT), 20 June 1935 Former Student Dies Word has been received here of the death last Monday in Benton at Fort Benton of J.W. Lenning, a graduate of the State Normal college in 1901, who will be remembered by many older residents of the city. Since his graduation, Mr. Lenning has been city superintendent of schools at Fort Benton, being oldest in point of service in this state for that position. His son, Fred Lenning, was a graduate from Normal college this spring.
