Mrs. Bertha Lenning Died at Denver Friday, Nov. 20 Mrs. Bertha Lenning, a resident of Fort Benton and Chouteau county for very nearly all her life, passed away quite suddenly on Friday, Nov. 20, at the Denver General Hospital in Colorado. Death was caused by heart disease. She had been sick only a short time. The news of her passing came as a great shock to her many friends throughout this county where he had spent the greater part of her 75 years of life. Mrs. Lenning had resided in Denver for the past three years at the home of her son, Fred F. Lenning. Bertha Morrow was born in Rock Creek, Mont., near Helena, on Sept. 28, 1878, and came to Fort Benton the following year with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Morrow. Her father was one of the pioneer cattlemen of this area. He came with his parents from Colorado from Canada and moved to Montana in 1863, spending some time near Helena. After coming to this county he engaged in the livestock business which he continued until his retirement and the family then moved to this city and continued to reside here until their deaths. Bertha Morrow was united in marriage to Dr. J. H. Russell on Sept. 5, 1906. He was a practicing physician and surgeon here, and later established a hospital in Cascade, which he conducted until his death a few years later. She was united in marriage to J. W. Lenning in Nov. 1914. Mr. Lenning served as superintendent of Fort Benton schools from Jan. 2, 1905, until his death, June 16, 1935, having served as superintendent here for more than 30 years. Mrs. Lenning was a member of the Episcopal church during all of her lifetime. She was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers and took an active part in that organization as well as her church work. She was a good businesswoman and following the death of Mr. Lenning she looked after their ranching and town property interests, they at one time owning several residence rental properties here, as well as the apartment house they remodeled from the old Odd Fellows' hall a few years before his death. She is survived by one son, Frederick Franklin Lenning, who as been an instructor in the Denver school system since being discharged from the navy following World War II. Also surviving are one grandson and one granddaughter; brothers and sisters, Dewey Morrow of San Diego, Calif.; Leonard Morrow of LaJolla; and Mrs. Jeanette Thorne of San Carlos, Calif., and a number of cousins residing in this county, besides a host of friends who will mourn the passing of this old time resident. The remains were brought to this city by her son and funeral services were held from the Episcopal church in this city on Tuesday afternoon. Burial was in the family plot in Riverside cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement, and in her passing this community has lost another kindly friend, who was typical of many of the old time western residents.
