Cleveland, living in the southwest part of town, had died quite suddenly at his home Sunday evening, paralysis being the cause of his death. Cleveland, living in the southwest part of town, had died quite suddenly at his home Sunday evening, paralysis being the cause of his death. Saturday afternoon he was on the street apparently as well as ever. Sunday morning he got up and attended to his usual chores and was in the house preparing for breakfast. He stepped to the door to throw out a pan of water when he sank to the floor, suffering from a severe stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered, dying twelve hours later. His wife was present and immediately got him to a bed and called to Mr. Gilbert, who lives nearby. A doctor was called and all that human hands could do was done, but it was too late and he passed away about 8 o'clock Sunday evening. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church. Rev. W.F. ______ of Creighton, conducting the service and burial made in the Creighton cemetery. Jonathan C. Cleveland was born in Crawford county, Penn. January 14, 1831. When nine years old moved with his parents to Michigan, eight years after moving to Wisconsin, where he resided until 1882, then coming to Knox county, taking up a homestead on the Verdigre. He was a pioneer in three states. He moved to his home in Creighton in 1890. He was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting and going out with the 12th Wisconsin battery. He contracted the dread disease with which so many old soldiers are afflicted and was sent home to die. He recovered, however, but has endured a great deal of suffering since. He made a profession of religion in early life and was a constant member of the Baptist church at the time of his death. Was married twice--the first to Miss M.G. Shower? and of that union, one son, Louis, residing in South Dakota, survives him. Was again married to Mrs. E.J.G. Johnson, whom he now leaves to mourn his departure. Three sisters and four brothers survive him. Mr. Cleveland was an honored citizen, highly respected by all and the many friends extend sympathy to the bereaved.
