Zerbe died at Muscatine, Iowa, Monday night, November 19, 1888 of consumption at the age of 71. The deceased was born in Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, February 17, 1817 and was the eldest son of John Zerbe. Came to Iowa with his brothers, Samuel and Michael, July 1851; after residing here a year, he sold out, going back home and then to Ohio where he was united in marriage to Miss Liddie Sloppy, they moving to Indiana, where they resided until coming to Iowa in 1867. The deceased was born in Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, February 17, 1817 and was the eldest son of John Zerbe. Came to Iowa with his brothers, Samuel and Michael, July 1851; after residing here a year, he sold out, going back home and then to Ohio where he was united in marriage to Miss Liddie Sloppy, they moving to Indiana, where they resided until coming to Iowa in 1867. Jonathan like his brothers accumulated considerable property, but by a second marriage he, at the time of his death was dependent upon the charities of his relatives. His remains were interred Wednesday in the Wallick cemetery beside that of his first wife. He was a good, law-abiding citizen, a kind neighbor, and many outside the family, will mourn his loss. From a personal acquaintance of years we always found him a gentleman and friend of the needy. (Scrapbook at the Cedar County Historical Museum, 1888)
