He was the son of José Manuel Higuera y Buelna and María Antonia Redondo, both natives of Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa. José enlisted as a soldado de cuera and was posted to the Presidio of Monterey, where he married Josefa Florentina Camacho in the courtyard of the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) on November 29, 1794 (SC Marriage 00509).
