Sedgwick Dies at Home In Quincy, Mass. Was Eldest Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Sedgwick. - Worked His Own Way Up In Life The many Hawarden friends of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Sedgwick extend sincere sympathy to them over the death of their eldest son, Joseph A. Sedgwick, which occurred at his home at Quincy, Mass, last Friday morning. The community also extends condolence to the sorrowing brothers, William, George and Charley, and to the heartbroken wife who survives him. It was known by the relatives here that Joe was ill, but a telegram the early part of the week stated that he was better and that the crisis was past. The telegram conveying the sad news of his death was a great shock to them. Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Sedgwick were visiting relatives in Wisconsin, while on their way home from Hot Springs, Ark., and were notified of their son's death from here. They returned home Saturday morning. Mr. and Mrs. George Sedgwick left immediately for Quincy and arrived there just in time for the funeral services which were held at the home Sunday. The sad journey back was started the same afternoon. The body was brought to Hull, Iowa, the former home of Mrs. J. A. Sedgwick, where the funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the M.E. church. Rev. C. H. Young, pastor of the M. E. church of this city, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was made in the cemetery at Hull. The floral offerings from friends at Quincy and elsewhere were many and very beautiful. Following the funeral the sorrowing wife came to Hawarden where she will remain for a time with her husband's relatives. Among the relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral at Hull were: Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Sedgwick, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sedgwick, Mr. and Mrs. George Sedgwick, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sedgwick of Hawarden; Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Sedgwick and Miss Lillian Sedgwick of Gann Valley, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Levi Sedgwick of Wessington Springs, S.D., Miss Mamie Doane of Long Beach, Calif.: Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Edmunds and son and daughter of Madison, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Boomer of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Carpenter of Beloit, Iowa; Mrs. Jas. Agnes of Sioux City, Iowa; F. A. E, Goodroad of Canton, S. D. Joseph A. Sedgwick was personally known to only a few of the older residents of this city, having made his home away from here since early boyhood. He was a self-made man and began life's work at an early age. He learned telegraphy under E. J. Searles, the present agent for The Milwaukee Company at Akron, when a mere boy. At the age of fifteen he was appointed agent for the Milwaukee Company at Beloit, Iowa, which at that time was one of the important towns on their line. From that time on advancement was rapid until the time of his death when he was near the head of one of the largest shipbuilding corporations in the United States, besides holding other important and responsible positions in life. The Quincy, Mass., Patriot gives the following regarding his death: "The community was shocked to learn of the death this morning of Joseph A. Sedgwick, treasurer of the Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation, at his home on Goffe street, aged 45 years. Mr. Sedgwick had been ill for about seven weeks, having first been taken with tonsillitis. He apparently recovered however, and returned to his office at the Fore River. He took cold again, and since that time he has been confined to his bed. Reports from his home up to this week were that he was doing as well as could be expected. His illness however took a turn for the worse and he passed away at 7 o'clock this morning. Mr. Sedgwick was born in Wisconsin in 1871 and when a small boy his family removed to Akron, Iowa, and at a later date to Hawarden, Iowa, where his people still reside. He was educated in the public schools of Iowa and afterwards attended for three years the Highland Park Normal College in Des Moines and after graduating taught in the business department of the same college. In 1894 he entered the Railway Mail Service where he stayed for two years, leaving there in 1896 to take a position in the Navy Yard, New York, where he was employed in the Purchasing Department of the Bureau of Construction and Repair, serving there during the Spanish War under Naval Constructor Francis T. Bowles. In 1901 when Constructor Bowles was made Chief of the Bureau of Construction and Repair, he had Mr. Sedgwick transferred to the Department at Washington, D. C., where he was employed on similar work. Late in 1903, Mr. Bowles having resigned from the Navy to accept a position as President of the Fore River Ship and Engine Company, he offered Mr. Sedgwick a position as Auditor of that Company, which was accepted, and his new duties taken up early in 1904, afterwards becoming Treasurer of the Company, in which position he has ontinued until the time of his death. He was married September 28th, 1896, to Miss Lavinia Doane, who survives him. They have no children Mr. Sedgwick since his coming to Quincy has been identified with a great many public interests. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Wollaston and for several years was Superintendent of the Sunday School. He has also taken a great interest in the local Y. M. C. A. He was Past Vice President of the Quincy Board of Trade, Treasurer and Director of the Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation, Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Curtis Marine Turbine Company of the United States, the Harroway-Dixon Company and the United States Mutual Liability Insurance Company, President and Director of Quincy Co-operative Bank. He was also prominently identified with the Quincy No-License League, serving for several years as its president."
