Sedgwick passed away last Friday afternoon at the home of her son, Wm. E. Sedgwick, in this city, following an illness of many months duration. She had not been in good health for a period of fifteen years and with her husband had spent the winters in the south for a number of years. It was while sojourning at Hot Springs, Ark., last February that she suffered a paralytic stroke and for weeks there her life hung by a slen- der thread. She rallied somewhat, however, and was able to be brought home in the early spring and hassince been tenderly cared for at the home of her son until the final sum-mons came last Friday. Funeral ser- vices were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. A. Winterstein, and interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Sarah Ann Edge was born in New Diggings, Wisc., Dec 27, 1848, so had attained the age of 72 years, 8 months and 26 days. Her girlhood was spent at the place of her birth and on June 8, 1870, she was united in marriage with Thomas Sedgwick, who survives her. A little over a year ago they celebrated their golden wedding ani- versary. Five sons gladdened their home, two of whom, Joseph Albert and Thomas Austin, preceded her in death. The surviving sons are Wil- liam E. of Hawarden, George A. of Des Moines, and Charles H. of Ha- warden. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Frances Prouett of Hob- son, Mont., Mrs. Mattie Dickeson of Vallejo, Calif., and Mrs. John Murphy of Revillo, S. D. In August, 1877, she came west with her husband and they settled in Portlandville, now Akron, where they remained for ten years. In 1887 she moved with her family to Hawardenb and for thirty-four years she played her part in all that Hawarden has ac- complished. And that part was im- portant. Each pioneer made a funda- mental contribution which paved the way for future progress and prosper- ity. There are but few amongst us today who can recount the story of the settlement and development of this community as an exploit in which we personally participated. Mrs. Sedgwick had such a privilege and her daily life was a necessary unit in the wheel of progress. Hospitable, at- tentive to a neighbor's need, as wife, as mother, her ideals were high and her service real. In the home, in the church, in the community, her life was fruitful in good. Hawarden is better because she lived, and our citi- zens, recognizing the high purpose and accomplishments of her life and the immeasurable loss which her fam- ily has suffered in her death, extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved husband and sons. Out of town relatives and friends who were here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George A. Sedg- wick and daughter of Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Sedgwick and son Sidney of Wessington Springs, S. D., Mrs. Maude Forrester and Mrs. J. C. Gehan of Sioux City, Mrs. Annie Kidd of Akron, F. A. E. Goodroad of Canton and Mrs. Mary Johnson of Chatsworth.
