SEDGWICK SUCCUMBED TO SEVERE ILLNESS -------------------- Was Resident of Hawarden for Thirty- five Years - Pioneer Live Stock Buyer in This Section ------------------ Thos. Sedgwick, for thirty-five, years a resident of Hawarden, .passed away at 6:30 Wednesday evening at the Ha- warden hospital following an illness of several months during which time he failed quite rapidly. His condition became so grave that on April 29th he submitted to an operation. While he rallied at first from the-effects of this ordeal, the improvement was only temporary and for the past week it has been known to the members of his family that the end was near. Fun- eral services will be held at the Methodist church at 2:30 Friday afternoon, in charge of Rev. W. A. Winterstein, and interment will be made in the cemetery here. Thomas Sedgwick was born in New Diggings, Wis., July 7, 1848, so had attained the age of 74 years, 10 months and 10 days. He spent his boyhood in Wisconsin and on June 8, 1870, was united in marriage with Sarah Ann Edge at New Diggings. Mrs. Sedgwick passed away Sept. 23, 1921, following a prolonged illness. Grief over the death of his wife, who had been his companion for more than fifty-one years, undoubtedly contributed greatly to his decline and hastened his death. In August, 1877, Mr. Sedgwick and family came west and settled at Portlandville, now Akron, where he engaged in the livestock business. Ten years later they took up their residence in Hawarden and he has been a resident of this community since that time. Since the death of Mrs. Sedgwick he has made his home with his sons in this city. He is survived by three sons, Will and Charles of Hawarden, and George A. of Des Moines. He also leaves three brothers and four, sisters; J. W. Sedgwick of Gann Valley, S.D., Sidney Sedgwick of Galena Ill., J.L. Sedgwick of Wessington Springs, S.D., Elizabeth Peacock of New Diggings, Wis., Sara J. Humphrey of Burns, Wyo., Ruth E. Callan of Spokane, Wash., and Emma Agnes of Blunt, S. D. In the death of Thos. Sedgwick, Ha- warden loses one of its best known citizens. As a pioneer livestock buyer here he formed a wide acquaintance among the farmers and stockmen in this territory and his extensive busi- ness transactions contributed in no small way towards the up building and ultimate prosperity of this community. He gradually trained his sons, Will and Charles, in the livestock business and for a good many years past they have borne the brunt of the business which their father established although he remained active up until the past year and his counsel and judgment were always keenly sought by them in their business transactions.
