The deceased was born June 16, 1825, in London, West Virginia. While still young he removed with his parents to Lexington, Perry county, Ohio, where he resided until 1866, when he removed to DeWitt county, Ill. Here he lived until 1868, when he came to Emporia and has made his home here ever since. Mr. Brown was a member of the Predestinarian Baptist church and was known throughout the country for his thorough knowledge of the holy scriptures. He was of a kindly, genial disposition ad was beloved by all who knew him, both old and young. A widow and four sons are left to mourn his loss. The only daughter died in 1876. ******************** Emporia Gazette, Saturday, August 10, 1901; p. 1.c. 3 Elder Brown Dead. Elder Joseph Brown died at his home, No. 428 South East street, this morning. The funeral will be held at the house tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. The interment will be made at Maplewood. Elder Brown was 76 years of age. He came to Kansas in 1868 and has lived here ever since. He was born in London county, Virginia, June 16, 1825. When but a child he moved with his family to Lexington, Ohio. There he lived until after he reached manhood. He was married to Polly Skinner in October 1849. In 1866 he moved to DeWitt county, Illinois, and lived there until he came here in 1868.
