Description	:	Ed was the only son of prominent rancher and banker, J.E. Bower, who was 56 years old when Ed Jr. was born. His mother was known philanthropist, Leonora (Patterson) Bower, of the Baltimore Pattersons. Ed was introduced to his wife, Mabel Claire, by his sister Marie, a year after his father died. They were married 14 Jun 1927, holding the reception at Leonora's Harrison Ave. house in Helena Montana. They were married 14 Jun 1927, holding the reception at Leonora's Harrison Ave. house in Helena Montana. Together, Ed and Mabel established, equipped, operated, and promoted the 7-UP Dude Ranch near Lincoln Montana, while they produced and raised three children: Edward III, George and Claire. Ed designed and built most of the buildings and furniture on the 7-UP, and he adapted the 30s - era vehicles into snow travelers. The Ranch was one of few places in rural Montana at the time, to have electric lights. This was from a DC generator Ed put together on a creek on the property, from a surplus elevator motor, powering glass batteries in the basement of the main house. He also created an olympic-sized, solar heated swimming pool. The Depression of the 1930's came along as the 7-UP Ranch was starting to grow and prosper. Ed travelled "back East" numerous times, to promote the Ranch and generate visitors. Despite his efforts, the 7-UP closed in early 1942, at the start of U.S. involvement in WW II. The family briefly moved to San Antonio, where Ed was trained in aircraft inspection. After training, Ed transferred to Malmstrom AFB in Montana, and the family bought a house in Great Falls in late '42. After the war, Ed started a furniture upholstery business with his cousin, Fred Thies. Ed and Fred Upholstery operated for at least six years, until Fred's death in '51. Ed and Mabel divorced in '46, the Ranch was sold, and he married Virginia Kingsley (the upholstery company bookkeeper), 4 Jun 1947, and fathered Beverly. Edward Bower Graveside services will be conducted here at 2:15 o'clock Monday afternoon for J. Edward Bower, Helena native who died Thursday in Great Falls. Burial will in the family plot in Forestvale cemetery. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian church in Great Falls Monday morning after which the funeral cortege will leave for Helena.
