Joe was born on August 3, 1920 in Sterling to Anthony and Annie (Piazza) Cucarola. He attended Padroni grade and High School, graduating in the Class of 1940. He served in the U.S. Armed forces during World War II, serving in the European Theater of operation. He was an Ex-Prisoner of War, fought on the Beaches of Normandy and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, in December, 1945. He was a survivor of the infamous German death march, where American GI's were marched in the winter from Belgium, across Germany to Czechoslovakia. He was the recipient of the first Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Farmers Award in 1956. In 1949, he introduced the first Liquid Fertilizer to Logan County. A business he operated for 5 years, then selling it later to a firm in Augusta, Kansas. He was one of the original incorporators of the Chimney Canyon Grazing Association in 1965, serving on the board of directors and its President for many years. In 1965, he entered the Construction Business, forming Midwestern Homes, Inc. He constructed and erected many homes in Northeastern Colorado and Western Nebraska. In 1953, he married Lillian Liebig of Platte Center, Nebraska in Sterling. He was a life member of the American Ex-Prisoner of War, DAV, VFW, B.P.O.E. Elks, and a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Joe spent significant years of his retirement appearing in public schools and other Colorado venues describing events of World War II, and the realities of war. In November 2013 Joe and Lillian celebrated 60 years of marriage. Joe is survived by his wife Lillian of Sterling; sons Gregory and Mark. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Robert and Eugene. Memorials may be made in Joe's honor to the American Ex Prisoners of War Association in c/o Joe Cucarola Trust and left with Tennant Funeral Home, PO Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.
