Mr. Frescoln was born 8 February 1893 to Joseph and Margaret Frescoln near Adair, Oklahoma, Indian territory, where his parents were engaged in farming and the raising of cattle. He died 7 November 1975 at the Baptist Hospital of Winner. The family moved to a farm near Smithfield, Nebraska in the fall of 1898, where he received his elementary school education. He graduated from high school [which was through tenth grade at the time] at Elwood, Nebraska. He first came to South Dakota in 1910 when he was 17 years of age to work on his brother Emmett's homestead. He later worked for Charles and Emmett in the Red Arrow Garage, a Dodge car agency as the bookkeeper. He was 25 years of age when he entered the U.S. Army in April of 1918, and served in Europe in the 89th Division, 355th Infantry, in a machine gun company. He was in the battles of St. Mihiel and the Argonne Forest and served for about six months in the Army of Occupation. After completing his service, he returned to the Winner area. He was married to Esther Ellen Leggott at Elwood on 21 September 1919. Three children were born to them, Dorothy Mae, Carolyn Jean and Robert Eugene. They made their home on a farm north east of Winner. Joe farmed with horses from 1920 to 1930 when he was injured in an accident. The family moved into the town of Winner at that time. From 1930 to 1941, he managed the Frescoln elevator which was owned by his brother Charles. In 1941, he bought a tractor and some machinery and went back to farming, retiring in 1968. Mr. Frescoln was a member of the United Methodist Church of Winner and served on the Winner School Board for several years. He maintained contact with some of his company in the army and attended nearly all of the annual reunions of his Nebraska regiment until the year before his death. Survivors included his widow, Esther, two daughters, Mrs. Lowell [Dorothy] Vanneman of Ideal and Mrs. Don [Jean] Wenzlaff of Hinsdale, Illinois, a son Robert of Milford, Nebraska, a brother Dewey of Winner, three sisters, Mrs. Clarence [Nellie] Coy of Bertrand, Nebraska, Mrs. Otto [Alice] Pelletier of Mesa, Arizona and Mrs. Lyle [Margaret] Mabbott of Dubois, Wyoming, three grandsons, five granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Edgar, Elbert, Charles and Emmett, a sister Clare and a grandson. ____________________ His memorial card lists as pallbearers Ryal Vanneman, W. P. Olson, Don Tuttle, David Lenker, Jim Jares, Harold Ebert. Honorary pallbearers were Reinhold Woidneck, Marvin Broline, Ivan Nelson, Jerry Shoemaker, James Vanneman and William Wilding. Flower bearers were Mrs. Ruth Olson, Mrs. Peggy Vanneman and Mrs. Luva Todd with Mrs. Irene Vanneman in charge of the guest book. Organist was Mrs. Ruby Reckling with soloist Jack Grieves. ____________________
