Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Masonic Temple in Fort Benton, with military honors at the gravesite. Joseph Gray was born in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, Feb. 5, 1891. He migrated in 1907 to St. Louis, where he overcame language difficulties by going to night school and worked at his trade as a barber. He left Maplewood, a suburb, in 1910, having decided to go to San Francisco, but came north to Great Falls, working there until November when he moved to Fort Benton. He opened his own barber shop in 1913, in the basement of the Benton State Bank building. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, he left with the first Chouteau county contingent, which Sept. 8 was enrolled in the 91st division, 362nd infantry. The division went overseas in 1918, and was in major action in the Argonne and further action in Belgium at the war's end. Joseph Gray returned to Fort Benton in 1919, honorably discharged as master sergeant, and resumed his business. He was very happy to be a United States citizen and took part in many community activities. He took great pride in his home and business, reflected in his beautiful yard and gardens and his hospitality. He was widely known throughout Montana for his business and civic interests. With the late J. W. Thompson he opened the Pastime Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor in conjunction with his barber shop in 1923, later buying his partner's interest. He married Harriette Gebhart in 1924. Mrs. Gray died in 1937. In 1939 he married Elva Gies of Great Falls, who survives along with two daughters, Mrs. Mary Whalen of Juneau, Alaska, and Henriette (Kiki) Craig of Palo Alto, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Fillipo Pecoraro, and several nieces and nephews of St. Louis, Missouri. His many interests are reflected in his memberships. He was a member of the Benton Lodge No. 25, AF&AM, Great Falls Scottish Rite, Algeria Shrine Temple, charter member Chouteau County Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters, past patron of Bethany Chapter No. 42, OES, Elbon Club, Emil O. Ronning Post 4047 VFW, American Legion, charter member Disabled American Veterans, Last Man's Club of 91st Division, charter member Fort Benton Kiwanis Club, Great Falls Elks Club and Meadowlark Country Club. Mr. Gray was also a member of the Remnants Club of the 362nd Infantry, which lost more than half its strength at Gesnes in the Argonne in a few bloody hours, and served as president for at least one term. His father, in the writer's recollection, was a soldier under Garibaldi in the 1860s during the unification of Italy. Joseph Gray revisited his old home in Sicily in 1958. He sold his business in 1961 to Arnie and Ann Hams, who relinquished it some months later and was purchased by Lyle and Junne Johnsrud.
