Description	:	Joseph H. Orner, second son of Benjamin E. & Hannah H. Orner, was born at Martinsville, Indiana, May 15, 1864 and passed away at Omaha, Nebraska, March 20, 1947, aged 82 years, 10 months and 5 days. He came to the Nelson neighborhood in 1884, working on the Aikin and VanValin farms for several months. Orner, was born at Martinsville, Indiana, May 15, 1864 and passed away at Omaha, Nebraska, March 20, 1947, aged 82 years, 10 months and 5 days. He came to the Nelson neighborhood in 1884, working on the Aikin and VanValin farms for several months. In 1885 he and his older brother, Osa, homesteaded on adjoining quarters near Wauneta, Nebraska. Osa "proved up" on his claim and lived alone on it for nearly 54 years. Joe after a year's residence, came back to Nelson and worked to "pay up" on his claim--selling it several years later to Osa. In 1889 he rented one of the Tom Hewitt farms (he had been workining for the Hewitts for some time) a mile east of the present home, to make a home for his widowed mother and six sisters, who were to arrive from Indiana. They lived here for 13 years and many of them were hard years indeed--the drouth stricken "Nineties"--with 10 cent corn and often no corn at all. With the help of mother and sisters, Joe carried the load and with strict self-denial, saved enough to buy the present home in 1902. Mother passed on in 1907. One by one the sisters married, and finally Joe and Lettie were alone in the home. For 40 years they have been the faithful brother and sister--meeting ruggedly the vicissitudes of life--always quietly helping others. Joe was one of 10 children--little Charlie passed away at 3 years of age in 1880--Osa going at the age of 76 in 1938. There remain to mourn his passing: One brother, Wm. B. Orner of Pismo Beach, california; six sisters, Mrs. Annie L. Francis, Mrs. Nellie Wright, Mrs. Dollie Portwood and Miss Lettie Orner of Nelson, Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Griffith of Hermosa Beach, California; Mrs. Ida Whiting of Wood River, Nebraska; and a host of other relatives and friends. Joe was a home man--never a joiner--but always the good friend, as many a neighbor can testify. He has been a substantial contributor to the Methodist Church at Nelson for many years. Hospitals, children's homes and similar worthy agencies always met a generous response at his hand. He loved the soil, wild life and nature, and knew them, as few men do. He was an inveterate reader--traveling over the earth in his old rocker--and able to tell you all about the lands and folks he had visited. Among his favorite friends were Teddy Roosevelt and Mark Twaine (sic). Always busy, always contented, always fair, his life is summed up in the closing lines of the well known poem by Sam Walter Foss: "Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." Today for Joe, the road has lengthened, but as the breezes chant a requiem through the stately old cottonwoods, home of his pets, the squirrels and the birds, we will always think of him, in his house by the side of the road, the friend of God and man. -- J.E. Portwood. Due to the fact that the Methodist church is being redecorated and could not be used, the funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. They were in charge of Rev. Clarence V. Powell, assisted by Rev. V.R. Daniels of Harvard and Mrs. C.V. Powell. Music was furnished by a quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. F. Murphy, Bertha Portwood and Lowell Powell. Mrs. Nova Hite was the accompanist. Lowell also sang as a solo, "When I Take My Vacation in Heaven". The pallbearers were: Wm. O. Bardsley, Lyle Whiting, H. Mc, Joe, Earl and Dale Adamson. The body was laid to rest in the Nelson cemetery. The following out-of-town friends were in attendance at the J.H. Orner funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baffington, Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Bardsley of Wauneta; Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Grummert, Edgar; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Forslund, Hardy; Mr. and Mrs. Marinus Madsen, Superior; Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Whiting, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Whiting, Mr. and Mrs. Nels Bossen of Wood River, and Mr. and Mrs. Newell Wilhelms of Manhattan, Kansas.
