Description	:	Lettie Mae Orner was born November 5, 1884, the youngest daughter of Benjamin F. and Hannah H. Orner, at Martinsville, Indiana. She passed away September 16, 1977, at the Good Samaritan Center in Nelson at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 11 days. Following the death of her father, she came west in 1889 with her mother and five sisters to live with a brother, Joseph H., on one of the Tom Hewitt farms southeast of Nelson. Read More	Lettie Mae Orner was born November 5, 1884, the youngest daughter of Benjamin F. and Hannah H. Orner, at Martinsville, Indiana. She passed away September 16, 1977, at the Good Samaritan Center in Nelson at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 11 days. Following the death of her father, she came west in 1889 with her mother and five sisters to live with a brother, Joseph H., on one of the Tom Hewitt farms southeast of Nelson. They lived there until Joe bought his own farm in 1902. She taught in a nearby rural school for one term. The mother passed away in 1905 and one by one the other sisters married until Joe and Lettie were alone in the home. She managed the home for Joe and assisted in the farm operations. They were faithful brother and sister for forty years until Joe passed away in 1947. After this time Lettie did some extensive traveling throughout the United States. She retired from the farm to her present home in Nelson in 1950. Lettie was well known for her generosity and hospitality. She was an avid reader, enjoyed creative needlework and maintained a keen interest in nature. She was active in her support of foreign missions and a long-time member of the Methodist Church. Lettie was one of ten children and was preceded in death by her parents and brothers and sisters, Charlie in 1880, Osa in 1938, Joe in 1947, Annie in 1953, Will in 1954, Mary in 1958, Nellie in 1960, and Dollie in 1962. There remains one sister, Mrs. (Ida) Wilson Whiting of Wood River, Nebraska, who is at present at the Nelson Good Samaritan Center, also numerous neices (sic) and nephews and friends. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, September 19, from the Nelson United Methodist Church with Rev. Clair Kess officiating. Two vocal selections were sung by Verna Kruse, accompanied by Mr. Ivan Schafer. Serving as pallbearers were Dale, Earl and Joe Adamson, Lyle Whiting, Richard Bardsley and Clare Rausher. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery. The Klawitter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, September 22, 1977; pg. 3
