However, there are headstones of some of his children that used the phonetic variation "Hudgell", so searches of their memorials using just the "Hudgel" surname sometime omit their entries. Joseph is thought to have been married to a Sarah Pierce/Paine, born about 1795 and died likely before 1856, possibly in Ohio.
