Description	:	Joseph Kirscher, one of the leading ranchmen of Broadwater county, in the Missouri Valley, near Townsend, is an early pioneer, and, in 1864, while coming on the long westward journey he found it necessary to fight hostile Indians who disputed his advance. He was born in Erie, Erie County PA, on May 3, 1840, the son of Peter and Caroline Harmon Kirscher. His father was a scion of an old French family, his ancestors coming from France about 1800. Peter Kirscher with his wife and twelve children settle in Polk County IA, in the spring of 1853. Here they developed a fine estate and the old farm has since been regarded as the family homestead. On May 10, 1864, Joseph Kirscher left IA for MT with his brother Peter and his brother-in-law, William Miehle and wife. Their outfit consisted of three yoke of oxen wagon, provisions and customary outfitting for the settlement of pioneer state. Other parties joined them on the way for company and for protection against the Indians. Mr Kirscher's first location in MT was at Virginia City. In the spring of 1865, he went to Last Chance Gulch, and from the spring of 1866 he prospected with poor success for some eighteen months. Having a brother on Missouri Creek, Mr Kirscher visited him through the winter of 1867 and spring of 1868, and the summer of 1868, he passed in ranching with his brother-in-law on Beaver Creek. Relinquishing this enterprise in the fall of 1869, the next spring he and his brothers Peter, Jacob and Anthony, located a ranch and worked it partnership until the fall of 1873, when Joseph and Peter bought their brothers; interests and conducted the ranch until 1883, Peter then going to the Deep Creek ranch, leaving Joseph sole owner. He remained, prospering, and in 1888 he added to his estate by purchasing the valuable Doggett ranch, on which he has since resided, and working both ranches with excellent success. On May 30, 1883 Mr Kirscher married Miss Mary Holst, a native of Denmark. She came to America in 1881, making the voyage without escort.
