Description	:	William Guy Kirscher, well known Broadwater County octogenarian, died early Thursday August 24 at Broadwater Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born February 19, 1886, in the Canton Valley homestead dwelling of his pioneer parents, Joseph and Mary Holtz Kirscher. He attended the rural Whaley school, Cronk and County High Schools in Townsend. He graduated in engineering from Montana State College, Bozeman in June 1909. Guy was elected county engineer in 1910. Read More	William Guy Kirscher, well known Broadwater County octogenarian, died early Thursday August 24 at Broadwater Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born February 19, 1886, in the Canton Valley homestead dwelling of his pioneer parents, Joseph and Mary Holtz Kirscher. He attended the rural Whaley school, Cronk and County High Schools in Townsend. He graduated in engineering from Montana State College, Bozeman in June 1909. Guy was elected county engineer in 1910. On October 26, 1911, he married Mary Edna Bull, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Bull, Bozeman area pioneers. Mr Kirscher's long and varied career was marked by service to his friends and neighbors. From 1912 until 1922 he was part owner and operator of an elevator, a hardware stock company, the Central Garage, secretary of InterMountain Milling Company, and city engineer,in additon to operating his father's two ranches in the Canton Valley. In 1922 the Kirschers moved to the ranch to live. In 1934-35, Guy worked with the federal government, measuring wheat and beet acreage and buying cattle. He is credited with devising a simple method of acreage measurement. A long-worked-for dream came true with the building of the Toston Dam and Broadwater-Missouri canal. Guy helped build the canal in 1938, managed it from 1940-48 and was secretary-treasurer from 1948- until the time he retired in 1952 following a serious illness. During this time management of the ranches was turned over to his sons, except for a period during WWII, when the land was leased. Guy also served as Broadwater County Representative to the Montana State Legislature for two sessions in 1939 and 1941, during which time he was member and chairman of several important committees. He was a leader in forming agricultural co-ops in the county; a charter member and long time director of the Farmer's Union Co-op; helped reorganize the Deep Creek Cemetery Association, serving on the board of directors for many years; was chairman of the board of directors of the Broadwater Soil Conservation District for 10 years from the time of its organization; and was for many years a director of the Bozeman Production Credit Association and Federal Land Bank in Bozeman. He was also a member of Valley Lodge # 21 for 48 years and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Preceding him in death were his parents and older brother, Louis..
